Default cruise control module

My 04 XJR has the dreaded warning light "cruise control unavailable"
I took the car to the local dealer and they say it's "most likely" the cruise control module. They suggest we replace this part first...........$5,700.00....just for the part.
The car had this part replaced under warranty in 2004
Are there any options to this $6,000 repair? I'd be content to have no cruise control at all but cant live with the warning light.
I need to sell the car as I cant afford this type of repair, but with this issue the car is so devalued.
It has but 26,000 miles, I hate to give up on it.

Default update

Automotive Scientific Inc. Your #1 Source for ECU, TCU, ABS, EBCM, Climate Control and Speedometer Repairs
you send them your cruise control module, they rebuild and return for $895.00 Guaranteed for 5 years. They say "plug and play install, includes current software updates.
Anyone have experience with this company?
I will post again if I go this rout, hope this is helpful to others.

This warning doesn't just appear because the CCM is defective, there can be other reasons, and these are cheaper and simpler to fix. Hence the dealer saying "most likely" the CCM has gone. The CCM relies on inputs from elsehwere in the car, and if these appear out of limits, the CCM will flag up this message. Of course it's a bit like MS Windows, and the error message "File not found". It couldn't possibly tell you what file it hasn't found !

I had this symptom with my XKR, it was a bad ABS sensor on the front wheel. The cruise control gets input from the ABS and if it is not working right, the system goes down. Get the system scanned . The old guess-and-replace parts system is not the way to go, the phrase "most likely" is code for "we don't have a clue, so you will pay for our lack of diagnostics".

Update
Thanks so much for the input
I've called a couple independent Jag repair shops and they indicate it's the dealers that have the proper equipment to diagnose.

Should I take the car to a Jag dealer dealer other than Palm Springs? I do have doubts about their capability and sincerity........wrench's left in the car, fuse panel left on the floor board, "most likely" $5,600 for a part....come on.

I will call JPAM next and keep everyone posted.

On most all earlier cars you have 2 switches at the brake one for the brake lights and the other for the cruise control. When you apply the brake the lights come on and the cruise control is canceled. I do not know if your MY car has that same configuration but it is worth looking into. What tells the cruise control to be available or cancel aside from the on/off switch? As for the “most likely” comment I would hold off on the replacement of the cruise control module until you are sure. I used ASI to rebuild my TB and placed them on my page for others to use and to date they provided a quality service.
