Default D2S HID bulb replacement

Anyone replace theirs yet? Mine seem to be getting dim and looking online yields prices anywhere from $20 a pair on ebay to $72 Sylvania to $125 for GE to $244 @ the dealership to $220 for Philips and many more. As with most things, I imagine you get what you pay for so looking for answers from someone who has experience.

Also, how difficult is it to change them without removing the bumper?

Thank you.

I have the same problem with Vanden Plas 2007 - need HID bulb, wonder if I can replace it myself. The car's user's manual says it should be replaced by a technician, on forums I read people did it themselves.

Please, advise.

Thank you.

PS. Upon advice, browsed rockauto.com, they list an HID bulb as standard replacement at $74.

I was just browsing the 2005 sales brochure and it says the car is equipped with bi-xenon. Is this true? The parts book only has one bulb listed, does it adjust the angle? I know driving through snowy mountains in the middle of the night, the high beams are way brighter than the low beams.

@Jahummer, you will need D1S bulbs not D2S. The D1S has some integrated ballast parts in it and is a bit more pricy.

The bi-xenons are available in Europe, not US, for that market the headlight has a mechanical flap that is flipped when you switch to hi beams. The flap controls the cut-off of the lo-beams.

The dealer said they are just over $100 each which is cheaper the the D2S bulbs for the S-Class.

Are you certain of this since everything I have researched on replacement parts indicates that it should be a D2S.

Well, you were right! If you look at the front of the assembly it says right on it D1S. Anyhow, it was very easy to pull the bumper off and remove the entire lamp assembly off of the car and remove the bulbs.

Yup it's pretty easy to remove the front bumper. Took me about an hour, though! Plus I scraped the bumper all over the ground and stuff (for me it didn't matter because I was getting it resprayed).

Well there are 1 million screws on the bumper cover, after that it's straight forward. Make sure you disconnect the side marker lights before pulling the bumper off.

Actually, the hardest part was getting that $@&@$*& lamp washer hose off.

@veffremov

Received new bulbs today.

The factory ones were OSRAM XENARC electronic D1S 35W 66043 Germany DOT q7f5 06J

The new ones are OSRAM XENARC electronic D1S 35W 66144 Germany DOT q1i3 06J & and a bunch more numbers.

Logic would say that while the OSRAM part numbers are different (the 5 digit number after the wattage) since they are both D1S everything should work fine.

However I noticed right away that not only are the new ones lighter, the base design is different. The original bulbs look and feel a lot more substantial and solid while the new ones look and feel flimsy and remind me of some of the pics I have seen for the cheap $15 examples found online from China. There is a weight difference too. The original OSRAM weighs in at 3.53 ounces while the new OSRAM weighs in at 2.13 ounces.

Should I be concerned?

UPDATE: From what I can tell 66043 is the OEM bulb and is still available for a higher price and 66144 is the aftermarket replacement and lower priced, the designs are different, even though from the same manufacturer and I am not sure why that is and wonder if I should be concerned.

Don't be too concerned about the differences. Manufacturers find all sorts of new ways to slim products down. Some changes are solely to lower the price, but most of the time it improves reliability as well. As long as they fit and light up.

In the Xenarc brochure this is what they say about the new base:

OSRAM introduced a new base design for
D-lamps. The burner and its photometrical and
electrical parameters remain unchanged.
The main advantages of the new base design are:
• Increased temperature specification
• Reduced weight

I have an 06 XJR and replaced mine with bulbs from www.iJDMTOY.com. I used the 6000k temp. Lights are much brighter and whiter than factory. Been installed for 1-1/2 yrs and no problems. I also replaced the city lights and liscene plate lights t-110's with 6000k LEDs. The look is awesome and all have been working fine. Purchased all bulbs from the same place.
I also put their HID kit in my F-150 ( bi xeon headlights and fog lights) and CLK 55AMG (headlights, fog lights and liscense plate LEDs) about 2yrs ago. Everything I've ever bought from them works great.
