Default Daytime Running Lights won't stay off

I have an 04 VDP. I change the setting for the DRLs in the touchscreen to off, which should go into effect at the next start cycle, but it doesn't.
I'm in Ohio where daytime running lights are optional, and I don't like my HIDs burning all the time so I'd like to have them off. The car did spend the first decade of its life as a California car where DRLs are required. Because it was a Cali car, is the touch screen option being ignored? Is this something I can gat into a maintenance sub menu and change, does it need a dealer scan tool, or should I just give up and start stocking bulbs in my garage?

Have you checked your light stalk? They are known to suffer from broken wires which result in the lights not functioning correctly. Repair is pretty straight forward - remove stalk and open the clips. If the wires are broken you will see it immediately. There are write ups and videos on the procedure. I had mine out and repaired in under an hour following the write ups.

The lights work perfectly, except I can't disable the daytime running lights. Could a switch fault still be the cause?

My 04 base XJ8 is the same, only way to turn them off is on the stalk.

The 07 is different, left on auto they turn on, or off with the ambient light.

They both read lights are off, when not turned on, or on auto.

DRLs cannot be turned off on our Canadian cars since they are required by law. Possible the California car is the same since it is law there also. Although on the Canadian cars it is not even an option on the menu screen.

Hey, just wanna let you know that I can turn the DRL off on my dad's 04 XJ8, which is a California car too, so I don't think it cannot be turned off.

I started off running my DRL's all the time, but after reading this forum for a while, I decided to risk an accident rather than unnecessarily wear out my DRL's. <serious>

How would you know unless you can see over the steering wheel? <NOT serious!>

DRLs was an option on both my UK cars, you had to set it using the vehicle settings option, I don't think they can be turned off using the lights switch. I never used DRLs. US cars may be different, but have a look in the vehicle settings in the owner manual.

My 04's lights CAN be turned off, but only with the stalk, so far,

Unless it can be accomplished, with the fancy computer set up, that i don't have .

Yup, that is correct, because that's what I did on my dad's car.
I don't know much about non-touchscreen car though.

How would I know? Hmm, that's a good question
Pretty much just need someone standing outside and tell me whenever the light turns on or off when shifting to a different gear (If it turns on, DRL is still on, if if doesn't turn on, then DRL is off).
