Haha, nice thinly veiled swipe at me!

I find that on most car forums, people act like their cars are absolutely perfect in every regard, and are too proud to admit any of its faults or misgivings, as minor as they might be. Apparently Jaguarforums is no exception. Hell, even Honda Insight owners (dear GOD!) think their cars are so awesome, sporty, roomy, comfortable, peppy, STYLISH, etc. At some point you have to draw a line!

The good news is the X350 is the best handling large sedan I've ever driven. But I've never driven a BMW 7 series or Merc S class. And I don't know if the X350's handling characteristics are anything to write home about. But I didn't buy it because of the way it drives. I bought it because of the way it makes me feel when I drive it! (And a lot of that has to do with looks, character and heritage, not handling.)

Hey, I'm just calling 'em as I see 'em!

DB6, being on this forum is a privilege, not a right. You are not entitled to anything, and I don't think your suggestion of having separate sections for the classifieds is warranted anyway. Just because you didn't get your way doesn't mean you have to start attacking and mocking the very creator of this community and questioning his motives, accusing him of acting in his self interest.

The post that Alan refers to has been deleted....it was only posted to stir things up IMO and unnecessary.

DB6 - I have no intention of removing you from this site for asking questions, we don't work that way here.
I've edited an insulting remark aimed at another member made by you though, and also removed the above post as mentioned as it was obviously intended to stir up trouble.
Please refrain from any other examples of this as repeat offences will get you removed from JF and thats not what we want.

Back on topic - could this thread rival the great hydraulics debate I wonder

Obviously many of us here will disagree on many topics, and thats absolutely fine.......please just don't run each other down whilst doing so.
After all, we're all here for the same purpose and all part of the same forum family

Perhaps true, but I don't see any evidence of unfounded loyalty in this thread

Fair enough :-)

I've been driving exotics and luxury sedans since I'm 15 and I must say X350 is one of the nicest sedans for the money, I don't know what some members are talking about but my XJ handles great and definitely loves curves, sure the brake pedal is a bit stupid but braking performance is not bad at all, and I've had a s500 before and I used to drive my dad's 750 all the time, both great rides and I must say they sure are built better but the question is do they have souls? No, they don't. Drive a Benz then a BMW and finally a Jag, you will be smiling when you get out of the Jag, and there are only few cars you can be proud to own, Jaguar is one of them, and let's be honest now we all know that it feels good to say;
"I have a Jag".

And just to specific I'm not referring to any Indian Jags, any Jag made before 2009 (excluding the X and S type) are all you can be proud of.

So, if I bought, let's say, a beautiful 2012 XKR with 510 horsepower I can't be proud of it?

For clarification, the current line-up was designed long before Tata took over. Look at the XK & XF, and as far as I know very little has changed either, the cars are still made in the same factories in Enland. It is merely a coincidence the XJ was released around the same time the new owners took over.

What I think you were trying to say is what a lot of us feel and have discussed before...gone is the classic Jag look and feel, one of the reasons I am still holding on to mine.

I find the comparison between the XJ and the Town Car rather interesting. When I bought my first XJ about 15 years ago I was rather surprised to find the cars were almost the same size. I had thought the XJ was a lot smaller. Dynamically, they were a lot different with the Jaguar being much more sure-footed. I haven't driven the latest XJ350 series to make a comparison though.

My biggest surprise was going from an XJ to my S-Type. The S-Type was a lot stiffer, but the steering and handling were razor sharp. The S-Type is also a lot smaller than the XJ and has less luxury features.

They really aren't the same size. Even the SWB Towncar is like a foot longer than the X350 LWB. The LWB Towncar is like 2 feet longer!

So how come they insist on parking in the compact slots?

I say you'd be proud of being wasteful, because for the same money you could get a barely used S63 AMG or Maserati Quattroporte, to me new Jaguars look ugly n they have no difference than a Merc or BMW now, they don't have souls. It's just how I think, I've always adored old stuff so don't get me wrong I'm sure they are gorgeous cars to many people, but I just love old cars, like to me a 1997 Viper GTS looks 10 billion times better than a new XK or a 1998 Bentley Arnage looks a lot nicer than a new XJ. I'm saving up for a V12 Vanquish, but I'll probably end up buying the Viper(blue with white stripes) I tell my wife it's the second most gorgeous thing on earth after her ;D

I'm sorry I thought you said XJR now that I reread it says XKR, you'd be extra wasteful that car is a joke for that kinda money, like you can buy an used 550 marenello for that money and be proud of it.

That's my explanation, anyhow, as to why the XJ just never feels very buttoned down in hard cornering.

Well, after having the lower control arms replaced under warranty, I must say it feels like a completely different car. It is solid, steering is nicely weighted, firm suspension, smooth turns, very quiet, drives like it is on rails. Over time slow wear made me forget what it was like when it was new. I have to take back anything I said regarding the way the XJ handles.

Having owned and driven all 4 of the vehicles being discussed, S600, 740i,Town Car, and xjr, I would rank their handling as follows: BMW, Jag, Benz,Town Car.
The BMW is by far the best drivers car, the Benz is the most luxurious, the Jag is the classiest and best looking, and the Town Car is indestructable and costs almost nothing to own due to it's exceptional reliability. The Town Car is not really in the same league as the others as far as luxury.
