I believe, from checking the other rear door, that there is a screw in the bottom of the door trim which will be impossible to get to with the door closed.

I thought the key was mechanical. Anyway, some info on double locking/ unlocking
Double Locking
Double locking prevents the interior door handles from unlocking the doors.
Double locking is activated by turning the key, using the driver door lock cylinder to the unlock position and then to the lock position within three seconds or by pressing the lock button twice within three seconds on the remote transmitter.
Successful double locking is indicated by the turn signals flashing twice, one short flash followed by a long flash and a chirp (if enabled).
Double locking will be inhibited if the REM or FEM senses the hood, a door or the luggage compartment is ajar or open. The REM/FEM receives its input from the door ajar switches.
If the vehicle battery becomes discharged after the double locking or central locking has been activated, opening the driver door with the key will mechanically deactivate the double locking on the driver door only.

Sean,
Thanks for that great info on double locking!
N/S/R stands for Near Side Rear, the Queen's English equivalent of our "Right Rear." In the U.K. and other RHD countries the driver's side is often called the "Near Side," and the passenger side is the "Off Side," so the opposite of NSR or N/S/R is OSR or O/S/R.
For more fun with acronyms and abbreviations see the database I compiled at the link in my signature.

You haven't answered my question about double locking but it sounds as if it is
because you can't open it with the interior handle.
"I believe, from checking the other rear door, that there is a screw in the bottom of the door trim which will be impossible to get to with the door closed."
I am fairly sure that it has been done with the door shut.
The only way to repair AFIK is to remove door card cut into the metal next to actuator and "destroy actuator". Replace with new actuator.
In the post which I read on this forum the mechanic used a large screwdriver to break into the side of the actuator and opened it.
There is a tiny microswitch in the actuators which can fail and if you are unlucky it
will fail in the double locked position.
After learning this I never used double locking.
I am just trying to think sideways-You could try banging
the door card in the area of the actuator while operating the unlock button.
because you can't open it with the interior handle.

Thanks Don. I often forget it's there. I especially like the OEM listing. N/S/R then is clearly no mechanical connection with the key. I was thinking drivers door and perhaps my 86 VDP which was the last door card I removed. I was dovetailing off of Merion1's question as I agree it wasn't answered

Re. double locking, I never use it anymore because of that risk.
Btw, I also try avoiding the electrical parking brake (when not parked on a slope) not to be stuck in case...

The problem arose when I discovered that the door wasn't locking when the remote was pressed, to secure the car I locked it from inside & since then it has refused to open.

Well if you have not double locked it ,hopefully if you remove the door card
you will be able to open the lock if it's simply the cable from the interior handle
which has become detached.
I had a look at my door and it would be possible to access the bottom screw
via the bottom of the door pocket.
Sorry paydase I can't find the link.
