Engine bottom protection plate - what fastners?
Hi All,
Can you please tell me what kind of bolts / screws are used to secure the plastic protection plate at the bottom of our engines?
Mine is loose and almost hanging by a thread (cable ties to be exact). They showed me that when car was on the lift for wheel alignment after getting new tyres.
There is a small front part at the bumper side, and a bigger piece behind that.
They said they'll fix it (no way I can reach and don't have a lift or pit at my disposal), but they didn't know what kind of screws / bolts etc I would need.
Any pointers would be appreciated! I am hopeful that this is also the cause of occasional un-diagnosed undercarriage noise.
P.S. I can confirm another poster's comment on getting the right tyres. My XJ8 4.2 NA (235/50R18) had 101Y (load bearing & speed rating) tyres on, and I never really liked the ride or handling. Too floaty & squishy but also too hard & bouncy if that makes sense. Just never right.
I made sure I got 97V or W (what the Owners manual prescribes). They didn't have Pirelli P6000, but suggested Continental SportContact. It definetely makes a difference! The ride is good, handling is good, feeling of secure grip is good. (this weekend I'll go put it to the test in the hills)
Thanks!

Hi Leon,
See the pic attached. There are three 6mm bolts at the front, and two each side back corner. There are two studs that hang down in the middle that need 6mm nuts with big washers. At the front there are two self-tapping screws that screw into inserts in the front cross member.
Edit: Anti-sieze grease on all the fasteners will help to keep them from terminal rust. The male and female fasteners are all available as replacement parts.

On my 2003 car the 3 at the front were a problem because the bolts/screws relied on threaded inserts in the chassis that broke away.
This goes back many years. The threaded inserts were fitted into square holes, I guess they were pretty average items. I fitted "nutserts" into the square holes, maybe M4, do not remember. They are 10 times better than the OEM junk.

Thanks Guys,
It turned out that a big part of my loose screws problem were actually at the pieces that come after this piece (towards the rear).
There I added 3 missing nuts with big washers, and one missing bolt.
On the passenger side right at the back is a bolt where the washer has torn into the plastic and no longer holds the plastic. I wanted to put in a larger washer, but that bolt unscrews up to a point and then it just turns without releasing! I could turn it back tight, not sure what is on the other side or how to fix.
The 3 bolts right at front of the picture above is still missing - I misremembered this picture and thought they were meant for special panel screws - will go try a bolt soon.
And right at the back end of this piece I found that part of that last little lip is actually missing - so that last bolt cannot be inserted.
All in all it looks better already, but sadly it did nothing for the undiagnosed rumbling in the front end somewhere.
