Default Engine Coolant Low

So, I think i fixed my problem from 2 weeks ago. I decided to check the coolant sensor in the new coolant tank I replaced and discovered the old sensor has a black plastic sleeve on the wire prongs that sit in the coolant, the new sensor was uncovered exposing bare wires. I don't know why but i put the old sensor in the new tank and the Engine Coolant Low warning has disappeared from the dash. Good to go I guess.

Glad you finally sorted it out.

I recommend you confirm your old sensor is working. Easy enough to do, just get a turkey baster and remove the coolant in the reservoir. The warning should appear, then you know for sure. Then put the coolant back in.

Hi Smith,
I am beginning to get the same message in my XJ6 (X350) done 143K now. The message appears at random, guess mostly on long haul drives after driving for about 15-20 kms. I open the cap and see that the coolant is full up to the neck. Also where is the reservoir tank ? I cannot see it. Or is it there ? I feel it may be a sensor issue. Can you advice where is the sensor and how do I access it? Can I do it myself with few tools or I need a garage environment for it ?

Any advice from any one please will be helpful.

I did the test this morning, emptied the tank, started the car, put it in gear and the warning came on, filled the tank, started the car, put it in gear, no warning came on. Good to go now. Thanks.

The reservoir tank is the one you take the cap off to fill. It may be a faulty thermostat to start with. Easy to replace but messing with all the coolant coming out. The low coolant sensor is at the lower portion of the tank between tank and engine, two wires go to the plug, black and orange on my car. The sensor does come out with a quarter twist to the left, then drops out.

Thanks Smith. I will be trying this soon as time permits, and update you with results.

Hi Smith,
I tried checking for the sensor, but could not be sure what am I seeing.

You also mentioned it could be the faulty thermostat that I should check first. Is the thermostat and the sensor the same thing ? IF not, where is the thermostat ? Also how do I drain out the coolant for the testing ? Please advice.

Any pictures of the sensor area or the thermostat will help a ton.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jagnew. Please take some time to introduce yourself in the new member area. It'd be nice to get to know a bit about you. Also, it helps us help you if you add your vehicle info in your signature so we know what car you have.

Hello Sean and Smith,
I finally got the problem. It is not the sensor or the thermostat problem.
I started by testing it by putting some extra coolant/water in the reservoir tank (letting it overflow too), and the message vanished. So this proved that it cannot be the sensor issue.
Minutely looking at the hose ends, I found that there is a very small leakage from one end of the hose pipe/vent between the reservoir and the radiator. Have not changed it yet, but I think it will be ok after the change.

Will keep posting updates.

Thanks everyone.
