Well it looks like the situation may finally be resolved.
A key person at the dealer came back from vacation, spoke with the people at Ford ESP, explained how he botched the original paperwork and got them to agree to accept the correct paperwork and put the warranty into effect. Part of the process was that he needed to prove that the car was properly inspected prior to writing up the warranty contract and didn't have any pre-existing conditions which he was able to do.
Should be in their system today allowing the dealer to move forward with the repair.
Fingers crossed.

And we're done! Just got the car back. Seems like the dealer did a great job. I was out of pocket only $100 for a new motor andwater pump.
Despite the initial paperwork glitches the Ford ESP warranty covered everything. The dealer was very pleased with their service and what they covered.

I bought a 2004 XJ8in the UK last week and suffered a similar problem after just one day's ownership.
Fortunately, I was stopped at a red traffic light when my engine'failed'. It gave a strange sort of shudder and stopped responding to the throttle control - but the engine was still running. There was just suffiient response for me to 'limp' off the road onto the verge before is stopped responding altogether (but the engine was still running sweetly)!
The fault was diagnosed as a P1111, which I understandpoints toa'throttle pot (potentiometer) failure'.
No more cable/linkage tothe carburettor - it's all'fly-by-wire', so I understand the pot acts a bit like a radio knob - pressthe accelerator pedal and the pot turns the speed up.
I am told by my local Jaguar dealership that they cannot change the pot alone; they'll have to change the whole throttle control box @ £747.30GBP [$1471.07]!

Thanks as well for your advice re costing. The only problem now is sourcing a replacement! The dealership says they're on 'back-order' with their stores and they're having difficulty locating one through other dealerships. Any ideas re supply chain for official Jaguar parts in UK?

I was looking hard at the first picture of the head, it looks like the oil passage to the first cam bearing was never bored! If this is true, the car went a long way with no lube to the firstcam bearing. You can see where the second one is bored into the oil passage.
