Engine knock at cold start
Hello to all,
Since the last 2 years i've been hearing a noticeable knocking/clacking noise from my engine at cold start only. After a few minutes the engine is super quiet. car runs like a charm.
my trusted mechanic suggested that I go from a 5-30 synthethic oil to a 5-40 grade synthethic oil, which I did last spring.
Am still not satisfied. what do you suggest I do next spring when I do my next oil change? ( my car a 2005 Super V8 is in winter storage now ).
I treat this car like a queen, follow all the scheduled service maintanance ,, put the highest octane fuel 94.
Some people suggest a engine flush and a additive for lifters,,,,??????
Thanx
LF

Is it actual engine knock?
check this thread out: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...startup-90627/
could be something similar.
I just bought a new gatorback belt to try on mine, will report back as it's to get cold later this week.

Yeah, most likely a lifter then. Mine is quiet, but my GTO was really loud. Loud lifters don't tend to be detrimental to the longevity of the motor unless it was caused by an oil pressure issue. The lifters are loud in the Lincoln LS almost at all temperatures and going from 5w20 to 5w30 helped when warm, but cold start is always a bit noisey.

Does the Super V8 have variable valve-timing ? This relies on oil pressure to separate two pieces of metal, and also has a lock-pin to prevent movement until oil pressure has built up. If the lock pin doesn't engage, you could get a clacking sound until the oil is present. Its a bit like a hydraulic lifter, really.

I have a very faint clicking sound on mine when cold but it only lasts for a few seconds. Your symptoms sound like a sticky hydraulic lifter. I have not tried this in the Jag but on other cars (domestic, older cars) I used Marvel mystery oil (on a fresh oil change, use 1 qt of Marvel oil) with great results! It is not a panacea or an immediate fix but over a couple of thousand miles you will notice a difference.

UPDATE
Hello to all:
I removed my car from winter storage in mid April. I decided to do the following to see if I can improve the engine clicking at cold start.
- Did an engine flush with this awesome product: PROTEC Autocare engine flush.
-replaced engine oil with Motul excess synthethic oil
-replaced oil filter with Mahle., with anti drain back valve.
-added LiquiMoly lifter additive.
I am very satisfied with the results, engine starts up very quiet now and its seems like it is more responsive than previous.
I strongly suggest this procedure to all as a preventive maintenance.
I will do this every other year,
Enjoy your day.

Good day to all,
Its been over 5 weeks since my oil treatment and I have to say my engine sounds and runs like a cream puff. I am totally satisfied with the Protec engine flush and the Liquimoly lifter additive . I am not one to put anything in my engines ( The Grim Leaper is my baby ), I did a lot of research on both products and they are top of the line.
Protec lubricates and cleans as it goes through its cycle, clears out all sludge in vvt's. the lifter additive is just for maintenance.
The Protec engine flush is a little pricey for those of us that live outside the USA , due to shipping and custom duties, but its well worth it!
enjoy your day

I know they don't have lifters I'm a mechanic have been for forty years but my car has a little tap on startup not always and I suspect the VVT unit and to change it is not a five minute job so adding a can of liquimoly is not going to hurt it but I know I will have too replace them at sometime
