Engine removal w/o removing the transmission?

Engine removal w/o removing the transmission?
Is it possible to remove the engine and merely unbolt the transmission from the flex plate? I'm thinking about trying it and don't fancy pulling the transmission as I don't have a lift and it doesn't look like a fun job to try on your back.
Thanks for any insight.

The front of the torque converter has a boss about 2" long that fits into the rear of the crank. You have to take the bolts out securing the torque converter to the flex plate. There is a rubber trapezoidal shaped plug right next to the crank sensor on the front of the shield at the rear of the engine that I used for clearance. use an old style drum break adjuster to rotate the flex plate until each bold head is visible in the opening. I don't remember if there are three or four bolts securing the torque converter to the flex plate.
You will need to have a jack under the trans when you pry loose the trans from the engine and the torque converter from the rear of the crank.
