Default Engine sound at idle?

I have an 04 xj8 with 77k on the clock. I recently purchased the car and now am starting to hear a strange engine noise when I'm at idle sitting at lights. You can hear the engine rpms oscillate up and down while sitting at idle but the tach never shows any movement. You can feel it in the seats and in the steering wheel. Does this sound like anything that any of you have come across?

Does this sound right to any of you? If so, is it something I can fix myself?

It would be very difficult for anyone to even attempt to diagnose a sound without hearing it.

Look for an error code first, take it to a dealer as a last resort.
