engine sounds louder when idling

Is there anyone out there that may know if this is a problem? I noticed while siting at a red light that my engine sounded a little louder. I discovered that it was not really the engine, but the fan that comes on to cool off the engine. When I first start the car it sounds normal, because the fan is not on then, but after driving a bit the fan comes on, at least that's what I think it is, and it makes the engine sound louder when It's idling. I never notice this before. Also, the car is running at normal temperature, so it's not running hot. I used to here that fan only after I turned the car off and the fan would run for a couple of minutes to cool the engine off, and it still does that, but I never noticed it running when the car was running, or if it did I couldn't hear it. I checked my coolant level, and it was a little low, but not much, and I topped it off thinking this would fix it, but it still does it.

Does anyone know what the normal running temp for a 2008 xj with 4.2 engine is? My cooling fan is still running louder that is used to and I'm seeing from other people on here that the engine may be running hot. Although my gage reads normal (right in the middle) Maybe I need a new thermostat , but where can I find out what temp the car is running at. I would feel more comfortable having it checked rather than just going by the gage.
