Feedback - Brake/Rotor replacement
My '04 VDP required brakes and rotors all around. Something I did not wish to attempt on my own. I spent $1400 for new brakes and rotors. I knew brakes would be an issue within 6 months due to last state inspection. Suspected rotors would follow. All this was not a surprise. What was a surprise was the fact the dealer charged me $1400 for all this. I foolishly agreed and accept my stupidity. Now I feel as if I was ripped off as I curiously checked with PEP BOYS - yes I know, but I was curios - that they would replace brakes and rotors at $400 per axle. The would need to order parts, but I could schedule at a later date.
Is $1400 a fair dealer price for this work? I now think not, but don't want to think my dealer is cheating me.
I'm looking for some idea of what others have paid. Thanks.

While a dealership service department is often more expensive than other mechanics, I haven't experienced a dealership intentionally cheating anyone. For some things they're the only ones to go to, though brakes and rotors can be handled by a good brake shop. Alldata lists front and rear pads at 129.25 each set, plus 1.7 hours, plus .3 hours for each rotor, plus 232.50 for front rotors and 198.38 for rear rotors (not sure if that's each or for the set on rotors). So at $115/hr + tax, shop time is over $300 and parts are over $700. That's $1000 easily without tax. If there were any other necessary repairs (a worn line, damaged fitting or caliper) the price could easily go much higher. One of the techs on here should be able to verify this or give you more information.

OK, so £1400 = £891. I looked out my UK main dealer invoice of last year when the rear discs and pads were replaced. This totalled £249.46. Labour time of one hour £87.50, a pair of discs £89.40, and new pads £72.56. I should say here that this dealer has a "club" for owners of older vehicles, so I get 20% off the labour and 10% off parts. However, even if I factor this in, I think you were overcharged by nearly £300 = $470. Unless you have the Brembo brakes which are much more expensive to replace.

Save this for next time. Save $1000.00
Maybe check the forum before and review the choices. Please review this link in FAQ. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj...service-61323/
Basically there are parts that will perform perfectly like I have listed and much more exotic products for race applications or appearance. Just as important is flushing the brake fluid, bleeding the system and resetting the electric rear parking brake system. The rear calipers thread in and requires a special tool to retract the pistons.
Read the above post and all the attachments and you can do this at home, for $317.00 in parts and about $15.00 for brake fluid and cleaner, in a few hours.
