Default first time jaguar buyer

Hello All,

I joined the forum for advice on buying my dream car a 2006 Silver Jaguar XJ and plan on buying the car in 2014 December to 2015 February.

I'm not sure what to look for and I am concerned with getting ripped off or buying a lemon that is too costly to repair as I have been burned before.

I also want to make sure that I am not overpaying since this is my first time buying a jaguar.

My plan was to fly out to where the car would be for sale, and drive the car back to Chicago.

What advice can you give me in buying my first jaguar so that my dreams come true?

Justicio

Have a look at the 'sticky' at the top of the forum list. Care in maintenance and a record to prove it is essential with all up-market cars. Also never buy "sight unseen", a test drive is essential too. These cars will run the marathon if you look after them. Condition is all with these cars, extra goodies just a nice-to-have. If you're looking for a 2006, then it should have the little changes Jaguar made after service experience. Mine hasn't as it's a 2003, even though still nice.

Fraser,

Thank you for taking the time to write back.

It seems like the steps to take are:
  • Inspect the Vehicle
  • Test Drive

I'm looking for a car that will run the marathon

What did you mean when you said:

Hi Justicio
I think they improved the torque converter to eliminate the "hunting on warm-up" syndrome, and moved the Valet switch on the dash as it was too easy to press it. There are changes to some of the suspension parts too to increase service life. The climate control fan control module was also improved to extend its life. Actually Jaguar never published a list of changes so there may well be others.

There is actually a 2006MY Technical Guide which lists the following:

The XJ 2006 model year (MY) update provide changes to the vehicle in the following areas:
• Introduction of Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
• Changes to the braking system.
– Installation of non-active brake booster.
– Introduction of single piston brake calipers to all vehicles.
– Revised brake disc fitment.
– Introduction of vacuum assist.
– Two new hydraulic control unit and anti-lock brake system (ABS) modules.
• Introduction of variable valve timing to supercharged vehicles.
• Installation of secondary air injection for emission reduction.
• Revised petrol catalysts loadings to further improve exhaust emissions.
– Assists in compliance from EU Stage 3 to EU Stage 4 petrol emission standards.
– Assists in compliance to Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) II Standards and North American Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) II Standards.
• Relocation of evaporative emission canister purge valve.
– Assists in cabin noise reduction.
• Bluetoothฎ telephone communications network system.

And there was also a US 2006 Product Marketing Brief (attached)

I stand corrected ! It would be nice if this was available on-line as a pdf file.
