What type of vehicle. Model, year and engine size. Be a little more descript than "doesnt work". Does it go to 3/4? Is it always buried at empty?

I just got done posting in the S-Type forum about gas gauges also. You may want to check it out and repost results of test.

2004 XJ8

it always seemed a little slow to react (not really accurate but in the ballpark)

now it will normally be o.k. on start-up, but when driving it will sporadically drop to empty and the empty light will be on. Then sometimes it will go back up and work properly. Sometimes it will do this a few times on a trip.

any easy fix?

Ok, this is how you tell if it is a fuel sender that is faulty or the instrument pack.
When you get in the car to drive it. You put key in ignition, hold down trip on the turn signal switch and start car, holding down trip for 5 seconds after car starts. Release trip and it should say Test Mode where the odometer is. If it doesn't, turn off car and hold trip while turning car to ignition on. Keep holding trip for a long 5 seconds (sounds odd I know) then release. The idea is to get it into Test Mode. Once in there, press trip and each time you do it will show a different test. Once you get to raw fuel 1, start car. You can drive around with it in test mode on raw fuel 1. When you see the fuel gauge drop, look at the raw fuel number. Then press trip again and it will go to raw fuel 2. Make a note of these numbers.
Once you have these numbers when gauge drops, please repost the result and we will help you further.

lol. Well you could get in the habit of putting it into engineering mode everytime you start car. You will be pissed when it happens again and you miss it. Only way to tell what is actually causing fault.

Hopefully it doesnt reoccur for you.
Good luck.
