Default gearbox fault now car won't start

My 2006 XJR developed a small leak from the sleeve on the transmission. I purchased a new sleeve and ZF transmission change kit from CTSC. when my mechanic took the car to his garage to put it on the lift, the gearbox fault light came on. He performed the service (installed the new sleeve, transmission pan and ZF fluid). After initially filling the fluid, he went to start the car and it will not start. the gearbox fault / parking brake fault light illuminates on the dash but turning the key does nothing. He checked the two wire plug on the tranny adjacent to the sleeve but said he never unplugged it. Any advice????

Default sooooooooooooo you drove in but not out

you had a drip on the sleeve, thats pretty common...you did it all right ...and now it wont start...
Tough call but I think
to much of a coincidence, could be that your mech caused the fault, he should be looking to fix the problem not you, what does he say?
Were you there when warning lights came on?
PS,
read up on the sleeve install higher up in this forum, you will see just how sensitive the harness plug in is after a sleeve change.

I agree with DB6, changing the sleeve requires some finesse, with warnings about damaging the pins on the Motronics unit in the tranny. The sleeve can be seated wrong, causing problems with the connection. My guess is that this is the problem, although I do not know the mechanism that would prevent starting due to the plug not being connected. I will say that I had read comments that the sealing sleeve is easy, but it is not that easy for just anybody, it takes knowledge to change it right.

Don't forget there are inhibits built into the system to prevent starting unless transmission is in Park.

Good point....another is that the TCM is part of the Motronics and valve body unit inside the tranny, so this could be all related to the no-start.

I might mention that I just had my tranny filter, sleeve and fluid changed last week at 62,000 miles and there were no problems. Just wanted to say that it can be done sucessfully. To remove the sleeve, the pan must be removed so that a locking slide inside the tranny can be retracted for sleeve removal. Reseating the sleeve right means getting the lock back in place.

Unfortunately, I was out of town when all this took place. The car was seemed to be performing flawlessly when I dropped it off. The service was being performed because there was a small leak from the sleeve. I supplied the mechanic (who came highly recommended and works exclusively on British and Italian cars) all the parts and tech info from CTSC. He said that the sleeve went easily but I'm guessing from the responses that a connector pin is either pushed back or not seated properly. He's supposed to be looking into it today. I also talked with a Jag mechanic at the dealership and he said to check the two pin connected beside the sleeve. This tells the parking brake the tranny is in park and to engage. Waiting to see what he finds out. I'll post the outcome. Thanks for the input. This forum is the best!!!!

Just heard from my mechanic. After taking another look, the gap between the sleeve and transmission housing was actually greater than 3mm. He re-drained the fluid, dropped the pan and found that the white clip was not fully engauged. Once he re-seated the sleeve, locked the clip "fully", re-installed the new pan and fluid, everything was fine. The car started and the gearbox/ parking brake fault went away. All is good. Thank you all so much your help.
Happy motoring!!!!!
