Default Gearbox/transmission conversion

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the five speed transmission from a 3.6L XJS will fit on a 4.2L XJ6?

Many thanks,
TM

What 4.2 litre XJ6 ? The old XK straight six engine, (last car left the factory in May 1987), or the 4.2 V8 of the much later XJ aluminium XJ saloon ?

OK, so you want to fit a late 5-speed manual gearbox, never originally fitted to the XK engine. I suspect this can be done, and there may be firms out there that do it, (for a fee). Either way, I suspect you will need a new bell housing, plus quite a few other bits, and probably a shortened or maybe lengthened propshaft, depending on the length of the gearbox. There will also be the problem of arranging the shift lever inside the car.

There is nothing insuperable in this job, just it may be expensive in relation to the benefit gained.
