UPDATE -growling and some clicking from rear end - UPDATE
i have some poor tire wear so i have written off the tire hum noise for 2 months. now i am having an almost bad bearing noise accompanied by some clicks. i shaked the parked vehicle in my driveway but was not able to recreate the sounds.
sometimes when driving the rear of the vehicle seems to sway back and forth.
i think the humming may be the tire wear problem, but why are my tires wearing odd?
now the clicking and cracking noises have me worried.
pleas help.

o.k.
i replaced my rear pads as they needed it and i thought it may help. Here is what I found:
the rear passenger wheel with lugs fully tightened can be wobbled with play of about an inch. when spinning the wheel by hand i hear grinding and clicking.
my question is this: I am not going to disassemble further. Is this safe to drive to the dealership? about 20 min. drive.
also, can an independent handle this type of repair?
Thanks, Please answer as I have only 1 day to decide.
Thank You

The answer has to be NO. WIth that amount of play, you are already into the danger zone, and lucky to get away without an incident on the highway. Get it trailered to a workshop as soon as possible. The "tire hum" noise you heard was the bearing noise which by now will have started to break up.
