Default Headlight Flicker-2005 XJ8

Occasionally at night driving, the headlights flicker off and on. No special conditions.

I just had a similar issue after changing my ballasts because of my drivers side light going completely out. the flickering light issue was a loose ground. The bolt that holds the ground wire was actually so corroded that it came right off when I wiggled the wiring to check it's integrity. Check that first if everything was working before.

I, too, had flickering headlights and ignored it until one dark and moonless night two years ago they went out for about 2 seconds on a winding country road. So it just HAD TO BE FIXED after that !! A new lighting switch was fitted and all has been well since. Examination of the old switch showed it had been "fiddled with" so clearly the previous owner, (or the dealer that sold me the car), had tried to see what the problem was without actually getting around to fixing it !

Mine was (and still is) the bulb. I haven't replaced it yet, but swapped the driver and passenger bulbs. Now the driver side is flickering, occasionally.

I perhaps should have mentioned that in daylight, I used to get anomalous displays for the satnav, it would flick over to Night mode with the switch on Auto. This doesn't happen if it is just the headlamp bulb. In my case the lighting switch was causing the problem. It is a fairly common problem on the early cars. I think later switches were improved.

I cleaned the aluminum contacts for my headlights and then applied silver conductive grease. I will report back to see how well this works to resolve headlight flicker.

some details attached, silver conductive grease, filed aluminum nut and aluminum stud and wires.

Hope this is helpful to all. I have used this same silver conductive grease on critical connectors on other vehicles. A little bit goes a long way.
