Default Heated Oxygen Sensor Control Unit, Bank 2 open/shorted

Amber check engine light is on in my 2004 xjr. Get P1647 Heated Oxygen Sensor Control Unit, bank 2 open/shorted.
Does this mean that I need to replace the Oxygen sensor on the driver's side?

Thanks, Steve

You would probably want to visually check the wiring to and from the sensor plug just in case you have had any possible rodent activity under the hood it it has been in winter storage, but in all likelihood it will be a failed upstream HO2 sensor on the driver's side (LHD model).

Thanks, Mark. Cool getting a response from N.Z.

I will order an upstream driver's side. Unfortunately, the dealer that was selling parts at decent prices is no longer; so, I need to decide where & what to buy. Any suggestions?

Rock Auto lists a half-dozen or so brands ranging from 40 bucks to 225. The cheaper is Bosch; the most expensive are NTK & Delphi.

Thought I would order the one &, if successful, will likely replace the others since I now have 95K miles on the old girl.

I've only had to do a failed HO2 sensor on my X-Type so far.....frantically touching wood as I type this......don't want to put the mocker on myself.

Might pay to look up some other posts about the HO2 sensors other members have used successfully on their X350s.
I would think Bosch would normally be good choice of manufacturer, but not having pulled one out of my XJ8 yet, I simply don't yet know who the original OEM was.

Yes, I love this forum....get to chat to people all over the world.

Thanks, Guys! Mark, I'm with you; I would not have had this car for so long were it not for this forum! So far, I've been able to fix everything except for the adaptive cruise control which i never liked in the first place; but that's a color of a different horse. Every five years, or so, I make an effort to fix it, but the challenge remains.

The lingo describing the different brands varies slightly in that Denso calls it an Air Fuel Ratio Sensor instead of an O2 Sensor:

Denso Air Fuel Ratio Sensor - Upstream
Part Number: 17920-05169482
Brand: Denso
Notes: OE Style -- DENSO is the O.E. Manufacturer / Air Fuel Ratio Sensor
Position: Upstream
Condition: New
Sensor Type: Heated
Universal Or Specific Fit: Specific
Grade Type: Regular
Shipping Options: Ground

It looks as though the the upstream sensor is the same for the left and the right?

Unless someone indicates that the above is not correct, I will order it because it is described as similar to the original product and it is offered at a median price of 150.

I will report back as to how this goes.

AFR is a way of saying it's wideband aka linear. (The upstreams are, the downstreams are not.)

Dumb question:

Do I accomplish this replacement from under the car? On the driver's side, from above, I don't see anything looking like the sensor. If this can be done from above, what should I remove on the driver's (left) side to expose? Since, I suspect, the threaded end goes into something on/or forward of the catalytic, I will see it from underneath? I will get the appropriate sized O2 slotted drive for my socket wrench.

Many years ago, I downloaded the series of shop manuals provided on this site. However, I have never figured how to find anything. e.g., In the Table of Contents I found reference to replacing the sensor as 303-14B. Checking the other 3 manuals, I could not search for the actual directions in the thousands of pages... Assuming I can figure out how to do this without the manual, that is a subject for another day.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks, Meirion1!

Miss my 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII. While in college & driving the Healey, I had to carry a little short stick to beat off the girls when I came to a stop! Dems were the days!! The wife insisted I sell her in 1976 when our first was born.

Will put her up and find the threaded end into the exhaust and follow up to the other end. I suspect air filter, etc. will have to come off, too. After researching a bit, I think if just replacing the upstream left will do the trick, I will stop there.

Best,

SS

Very easy to find the threaded end to the exhaust underneath. See a wire from above that could be going to the plugged end. Is it behind or under the power steering reservoir? Can't imagine the reservoir would need to be removed; perhaps, removing air filter might give a better view.

Does anyone know where the plugged end is on my 04 XJR? The diagrams I have found so far are of other cars.

Thanks,

SS

Good choise on the Denso sensors. I bought a genuine one on ebay and it failed instantly with the same error, heater fault, I then bought a replacement from a proper shop and it worked. You will find the connectors are quite close by to the sensors and are clipped to the undebody of the car. You will need a socket with the cut in it so the wire isnt in the way. Easy to do and they are moore or less where your feet are but under the floor.

Thanks, Joe. I've only made 2 purchases on ebay: One was an air suspension rebuild kit from BagPiping Andy in Scotland in 2013; for about 50 bucks - I had as good a rebuild as I could have paid 1500 for at the dealer; the other was recent for that large weird looking plastic thingamajig that is part of the breathing apparatus (I had burnt a hole in the original with a halogen lamp!). It was again a great value! It was a little gray in places until I coated it with an ultraviolet activated substance to turn things black & wow! It looked so good that I have used it on plastic covers, etc. & they are not only as black as the ace of spades, but they have an appealing sheen!

But I digress, As previously mentioned, I see the threaded part of each of the upstream sensors quite easily in the cat/exhaust & see how using the slotted drive will make short work of removing them (I hope). While I can't determine where the other ends are, I suspect tugging on the threaded end, etc. will help me find them.

If anyone can describe exactly where the plugs are, it would be helpful. X350 2004 XJR. I suspect things will have to be removed... More later

Best,

Steve

Joe & others trying to tell me that the plugs are in the vicinity of the sensors, thank you! I was convinced that that would be too easy; so, I was looking for some convoluted installation where all sorts of reservoirs, filters, hoses and wires had to be displaced or removed.

New sensors should be here on Monday. I have disconnected the battery. I don't think there is anything else to do before I take the originals off & install the new ones.

Best,
Steve S

Here are the 2 upstream sensors. They both look the same; so, pleased to be replacing them both.

HOORAY FOR ROCK AUTO!! Parts were to be delivered on Monday and they arrived at noon today, Saturday. Parts are identical to originals except the wire is about 1/2" longer. Easy to install.

Cleared the code & VOILA!

Thanks for your help. Couldn't have done it without you help. Have a nice weekend.

Thanks, JagV8!

I am getting P1111.

Last week, while reviewing stickies, I noticed an excellent thread on the fuel trims & was going to take a look. However, she is running exquisitely & to the extent that is indicative, I had forgotten about the trims.

Thanks for the reminder! While I had some time available when the check engine light came on, my schedule is slammed for a few weeks now, but will tend to it ASAP!!
