Heater core removal. Help needed.

I am replacing the heater core (no heat drivers side) and I am stumped by two problems, so far. It is extremely difficult to move the hose clamps at the firewall . I have pulled one back (return) but can't reach the other one. Secondly I am having difficulty removing the blower housing I have removed 4 of the 5 attachments bolts and nuts but cannot find the 5th, it is supposed to be on the upper left looking at it from the passengers seat. My hope is that once I have the blower housing removed I'll have enough wiggle room to move the inlet and outlet pipes forward enough to allow removal of the heater core. So, has anyone attempted this heater core replacement? Is there enough wiggle room and where is the fifth blower housing mount? Any other tips/shortcuts? I hate to give up and take it to an indie who has quoted me 4 hours, although that is starting to look pretty good now. I figure charging 4 hours there has to be some shortcuts from what the Jag manual says. Thanks

Got the heater core out at last. Four hours at an Indie is a bargain if you've never done it before. It would be a lot easier second time round, but hopefully I'll never do it again. The challenge is interesting however if you like that kind of thing. Now to put it back together. Regards

I ended up pinching off the heater hoses at the firewall, the heater pipes can stay attached as there is enough wiggle room. I replaced those mickey mouse Phillips head screws for the heater pipe to heater core clamps with hex head bolts (4.5mm I think) that were twice as long, much easier to capture the thread in the clamp and can use a socket on a socket driver. Make sure the clamps are gripping both the pipe and the heater core flange before tightening up too much, its fiddly, awkward work. Hook up a hose to a funnel and remove the lower (outlet) pipe first and allow the heater core to drain into the funnel out to wherever, saves a mess in the interior. I used a new core and found it very tight sliding in so before it went too far I removed it and lubed the foam on the top and bottom of the core with Vaseline in case I had to remove it for some reason. Not much room and yes, like Mr. Snyder said, the passenger seat is a PITA, might think about removing it. Good Luck.
