Default Help.

The amber warning light, and gearbox fault came on,but when I stopped and started the engine again it was fine. It is a 2004 XJR with 40 K on the clock. What should I do.?

First thing I would do is to check the transmission fluid and make sure it is full, and correct level if needed. No dipstick on these either, you have to remove fill plug from side of trans with the engine running, and fill until fluid starts running out of hole. Make sure you use either Jaguar transmission fluid or Lifeguard 6 zf fluid.

Hi BOB7747,

pcar00's recommendation to check the fluid level and condition is always good advice when beginning the diagnosis of any transmission-related fault. As far as I can tell from the manual, the X350 ZF transmission has no internal fluid level monitoring that could trigger the dash warning lamp. It does have an internal oil temperature sensor, though. At the very least it would be worth checking for fluid leaks around the plastic transmission pan/filter before checking for any obvious electrical problems, which are the most common cause of the dash warning lamp.

You might read some of the other threads about transmission faults, such as the one at the link below, which mentions a number of possible causes of the dash warning lamp, including a weak battery (a common cause of many electrical gremlins on Jaguars). Also suspect poor electrical connections either at the transmission electrical connector or at the ground point used by the Transmission Control Module (TCM), located in the engine compartment on the left side, rearward of the suspension tower (on our '04 it is under the plastic cover for the brake master cylinder). The TCM itself is mounted above the valve body inside the transmission, and connects to the outside world via a 16-way grey electrical connector "adjacent to the transmission bell housing" (the schematic doesn't say on which side). If you can locate that connector, it might be worth checking it for oil or grunge contamination and cleaning it with zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray (not WD40).

If the warning lamp recurs, it would be prudent to have any stored fault codes read by a Jaguar dealer or a good independent Jag specialist with the proper dealer-level diagnostic software.

Please keep us informed!

Thanks for the reply, will check the ground point. and the battery is only a few years old, but will check this also. I do short trips, so this is not ideal. I will try to find a good Transmission repair shop, bit hard when you are not living in a City.I don't think there are any leaks, but a very slow leak won't show."40.000 K is not much, so hope it will be something easy.
