I got mine from ebay - $21 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hood-Lift-S...53.m2749.l2649) for the pair and was able to take out the old ones and put the new hood struts in under 5 mins.

Rock Auto has the Sachs Stabilus (OE) brand struts for the trunk/boot lid for USD $11.64 each, and the ÜRO Parts aftermarket struts for the hood/bonnet for $10.71 each. The advantage of the Sachs Stabilus design is that it is valved to reduce its pressure when it nears the closing point to reduce strain on the mounting points. Given the aluminum body parts on our cars, this is a good thing. When I replaced the struts on our '04, I could not find Sach Stabilus ones for the hood for less than about $70 each, but Parts Geek now offers them for $29.73, though they currently show only one (1) in stock.
Cheers,
Don

They are OEM. I have Sachs Stabilus now on both ends of the XJR, A8, and 335i. These European cars seem to all use the same suppliers.
I think 8 -10 years is about right to replace. All three would stay up. I had to hold up the lid when pulling one off. Once a new strut was installed it would hold up the lid by itself when pulling the other off.
