hey Fraser, well my car is with brutal. he called me a few days ago saying the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. he pulled it off the car and the car ran docile. said he's going to check the timing to make sure it didn't jump. put the new plugs in I bought and check some other things. that's where we are as of now. hopefully it's nothing major but some mislaneous things if so I'll still make it worth his time

sorry I haven't been able to give an update while. I'm working like a mad man out of town. my car is still with brutal, I have the new catalytic converter for brutal to install. he checked the ignition coils all seemed to be okay, he replaced the old burnt up plugs with some new iridium plugs I bought a while back. said other than the installing the new catalytic converter it seems to be running like a champ. though he seen some tattered insulation on the fire wall thinking some rodent could have messed with some wires or vaccum line because I get a restricted engine performance when around 5000 rpm. but that will be further looked at when I get the new catalytic converter installed. as of now that's where we're at. hope everyone's been okay.
BRUTAL I'LL GET THAT CAT CONVERTER OVER TO YOU SOON AS I GET A DAY OFF!!!

sorry i hadn't been on the forum in a while i been catching the red eye working all over the country for the last few months. im finally back home... sort of. my car has been with brutal for the past month or so. he was able to put on the new cat converter and installed the new iridium plugs i bought. i picked my car up Friday and had to head to Victoria right away driving the car (Victoria is a 2 hr drive.) which would be a testament if my car would be reliable once again. as soon as i got on the open road i could feel that my car was back to normal ive put 400+ mile son it since friday and all seems well with no issues what so ever and hope it stays that way. happy motoring all.

I had ALMOST the same problem....
EGR screw backed itself out somehow... which led to a "LOPE", if you will. Tensioners were noisy and failsafe/restricted performance lights lit up... As with your car, MISFIRE codes popped up like crazy. It took $1700 and part of a day, but not one code showed after the screws and tensioners/guides were replaced! I'm no expert.. BUT I DID find most of the info about the tensioners info on Jaguar Forum. Hope this was helpful. CarQuest is where I found metal tensioners/guides/gaskets/rings/and seals for a reasonable price.

@ Brutal everything is fine. my battery charged up and i hadnt had any problems with my windows or the the battery not holding charge. (knock on wood) the only thing i could come up with is when the guy hooked up that booster that wasnt fully charged to my stone dead battery it set off the failsafe and rolled down the windows. not sure if that would be the cause but thats what i came up with.
also with the gas that was left in the tank which was nearly full, my car swallowed it less than 120 miles into my trip. after i refilled the car the gas milage went back to normal and am still on that tank 340+ miles later. weather or not that gas contributed to my cat failing there was something wrong with that gas.
once again i cant thank you enough for getting my car back up and running. i missed it quite a bit. your the man!

I think a combo of plugs and something with that gas. It just smelled weird but wasnt high on ethanol and showed no signs of water so who's to say the true chain of events.

Hi All,
First post here. I just went through this entire situation myself and finally after much time, effort, and money....... we determined the exact same problem, CATs were shot and suffocating the entire vehicle.
The cause of the CATS failing was the car running too lean (thus very hot), and it literally melted the honeycomb inside the CATS, making them brittle and break up....thus clogging the flow severely. I have read other post of rear fender wells catching fire from vehicles running lean and hot......so it sort of coincides with the cause here.
Changed CATS and car performs 10000% better, however I have yet to track down the burning lean situation, so have to be very delicate with the car still or else I might end up doing the exact same thing again. Thinking vacuum leak, but not having any luck locating it.

well i have been driving my car daily since getting it back til just today when i had to travel to new orleans for work so i brought my other jag (work car) and i dont want my super V8 stolen! I still pay attention for unfamiliar sounds or odd behavior and so far so good. ive had no issues since replacing the bad cat conv. as far as my car doing the exact same thing again by cat failure i really wouldnt know how to prevent it from happening being that nothing was out of sorts when my cat went bad, tho i do see where your coming from.

Just bought 2010 jag xf not 5 hours after purchase. Performance restriction pops up. Took to dealership burnt cats rough idle exhaust smelt like fireworks that just been popped. Tech said could be fuel problems call today after checking more injectors leaking down. Littlw nervous about purchase and only 6 month factory warranty left what to do
