How can I get DTC codes without taking car to the dealer?

Hello everybody I was wondering if there is a way to get the Diagnostic codes with out taking the car to the dealer? I heard on some cars you can figure out the code by using a multimeter but im not sure how to do it or if it can be done on these cars. I want to check to see if there is a suspension fault stored.
The issue I am having is, a while back the "vehicle too low" light came on then went away. The light didn't come on for a while so i didn't think anything of it. Later the "vehicle too low" light started coming when I first started the car but it would shut itself off after the car was running for a little while. Now I notice the front of the car sits really low and the "vehicle too low light" comes on and sometimes turns in to "air suspension fault". If I shut the car off the "air suspension fault" goes away but it usually comes back shortly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want a 'specific' code for that suspension module, you'll need either a dealer trip, or the AutoEnginuity software with the enhanced features. That air suspension is very specific, and not many will be able to decode it.
For other DTCs, basic engine and transmission, any OBD II scanner should work. We even have a 'member approved ' thread in the general tech help forum if you're interested.
Definitely do a search in the XJ8 / xj6 forums for 'air suspension' and you'll see there's lots of threads, and only a few areas that you can check. Stevetech gives some good advice in a few on how to diagnose whether its the air spring, line, or compressor. All have equal chance of being the culprit.
g'luck

All you need is one of these and a laptop
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Plugs into the obdii socket and reads(/resets but be careful as you dont want to delete codes if they arent fixed) codes etc with the free software that comes with it
Ive got additional (free) software which gives BHP,0-60,1/4 mile times,as well as live data, graphs, pressures, temps, codes, etc etc etc and lots of pro features.
