Default How to change the engine filter and cabin filter

So the dealership said it would cost $115.00 to change the "engine" filter so I ordered the part. Now how do I change it. I saw where the cabin filter goes, easy as pie.

What about the Engine filter? Sorry for the earlier post I got turned around. So it's the Engine Filter. See my last post with photos

I have a 2008 XJR

Cabin filter is a snap.

On the passenger side, you'll see a removable cover with a grill moulded in it. Take this off and you'll see the filter. Its about a 5 minute job, but check the water drain is clear while you're in there.

When you do the cabin filter, pay attention to the arrows for air flow, and make sure you install them facing the right direction. When I changed mine, the previous owner had it installed backwards.

Oil filter or Air Filter? At $115.00 it might be the engine oil, oil filter, and the air filter.

not oil, then.

No that price was JUST for the engine air filter. He broke down the price for me

As much as I would love to save money on oil changes, I will pass on oil changes. I don't know too many women who likes to get that dirty LOL. See below to where my problem is now.

Okay, here I am now. Thanks to Reyesl for photos of where the "engine" air filter is located. How how to remove the cover. The front of the cover is easy, pushing the clips back to unhook. But it is holding in the back. I can't tell if I were to lift (might brake it) push, (might brake it) or what. How do I physically remove it. Here are the photos

Engine: 2008 XJR


Clips: Front of clips (1 of 2)


Clips: Push both to release front (2 of 2)


Back of case, how do I release the back of the case. It won't lift, it's tight. Whats the trick. The service guy said something about being careful not to brake the clips on the bottom.

Lift up where the clips are, then slide the cover towards the engine to unlatch the tabs on the Engine side. It sounds easy but it is a little difficult. Since I clean my filter monthly and replace it at every oil change, I removed the tabs and are currently using 2 screws to tighten the cover.

reyesl, Do you actually feel the difference with your engine by cleaning it monthly?

It's possible to wiggle the top off without removing the elephant's trunk, but I suspect that after you've spend half an hour on it, you'll give up and take the pipe off. The top will be in your way otherwise, and I think you'll want to clean out the dirt, swarf and leaves from the box.

p.s.

I think you need a 20mm M6 Stainless Flanged Head screw to refix the box, and I added a form C stainless washer. While you're tinkering under the bonnet you'll see a lot of M6 bolts that want changing, some are 20mm M6 but I think most were about 10mm. I remember the air box screw was longer than most. Lay in a stock and keep them beside the spare wheel. The screws on the undertray will be especially bad.

I live on a dirt/gravel road (country) with a million dollar view and the local area does get dusty at times (Army Base with Construction Equipment) which is why I clean it monthly. The air filters on Construction Equipment are cleaned daily.

In the top pic, you can take the tubing off up to the first "jubilee" (curved silver) clip or right up to the supercharger. Unclip MAF connector (the electrical lead near the filter box) first. Don't forget to reconnect it. (Same with any others you need to disconnect - might not be identical to my STR but looks like it.) Also, don't overtighten the jubilee clip when reconnecting. You just need a seal not a strength contest

I was able to squeeze the engine filter in it's place without remove the whole cover and not destroying the filter.

Quikcat: To confirm, does the air flow arrow face the interior of the car ( ie looking at reyesl car engine he has an arrow pointing to the cabin filter, does the arrow face that way)or does the arrow face out to the engine.

the arrow points to the inside of the car. Sponge out the cavity as it will be dusty and dirty.
