This bulletin informs the Dealer Network of a new procedure to manually program the key fobs.
To carry out the manual key fob learning procedure, follow the Service Information outlined below.
Service Instruction
NOTE: When carrying out steps 4 to 6, all current transmitters will be erased from memory. Ensure all transmitters to be programmed are available before proceeding.
NOTE: If at any stage two chirps are emitted, then an error has occurred, if this is the case, the process has to be repeated from step 1. When carrying out steps 1 to 7, ensure no other transmitters are operated within range of the system.
1 . Open driver door (door must be open throughout the programming process).
2 . Pull directional indicator stalk to headlight flash position and hold.
3 . Insert ignition key and turn to auxiliary position (position 1), then release the directional indicator stalk.
4 . Flash headlights five times (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
5 . NOTE: Up to five transmitters can be programmed. Push the second transmitter button directly after programming the first, etc. Do not repeat the complete sequence as the first transmitter will be erased.
Push any transmitter button (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
6 . Turn 'OFF' the ignition and remove the key, (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
7 . Close driver door and check transmitter(s) functions

Dunno how true this is but I read that you must complete 5 fob programming cycles, so if you only have two fobs, you do the first one once and the second you repeat 4 times after which you get the confirmation chirps to say you're done, also you should wait for a confirmation chirp after each button press. This is how I programmed mine, with no problem.

meirion1, your`re my hero !
I tried over and over, counting slowly to get the number correct... this was wrong.
Speed does matter, so my cat finally gave me the beep of happiness, that made my fobs working again.
BTW: I didn't find these instruction in the workshop ... is it hidden somewhere inside this doc ?

Mike, may I recommend not losing your keys? I have a reason to complain about buying a new key, the previous owner lost it. Honestly, that price isn't bad at all. The new key and remote, uncut or programmed, cost me $90 on ebay alone. I assume you meant 'friendly parts manager at the dealership' when you typed " ************* "? I thought so.

My XJR only came with one key too...
I could not find anyone local to cut an ebay blank key, so in the end I posted my only key to a guy in Birmingham (England) who duplicated the key completely, i.e. cut the blank and cloned the chip inside. Pretty crazy but I got two new keys cut cheaper than buying one new key here in Switzerland.
Lucky I went this way because while the key was away my IDS died and I wouldn't have been able to program a new blank anyhow...this process with programming only the remote without the IDS worked out ideal.
