How to Remove ECU from Car
#2
you will need a tamper proof hex head drive...plus a 10mm socket, plus a 3/8 adaptor at least 10 inches...you start by removing the cowl on the front passnger side.It is the pollen filter housing. which is held by 4 10mm bolts.Once you remove them disconnect the washer lines be careful not to damage them, once the bolts are removed just lift the upper cowl rim up and the pollen housing, and you will see the ecu harness. It will be held to one 8 or 10mm bolt on each side, but the center harness bolt will be a tamper proof hex head.I think the size is 30 or 27.Once you remove these three then the harness will come out exposing the pins etc. Then you go inside to the passenger side kick panel and remove the inside bolts...Let me know..and also make sure you disconnect the neg term from batterry...happy wrenching.

yes it is the regular troque head bit with a tiny whole in the middle...if memory serves me correct its the 6 sided one..may I ask why your changing the ecu?At times the pins will be corroded and have a bad connection. If this is the issue try using electro-motive electrical terminal cleaner..spray it on the pins and take a air hose and blow it out good...This stuff is awesome...I have used it several times...corrosion will cause the pins not to seat correctly and give a low circuit output.or a mil indication.

Hi 912guy,
I had an issue with water filling up the pollen filter box, and at the same time engine going into limp home mode with all the error messages flashing up on the dash.
I suspect the both are connected, and when looking from the inside behind the glovebox I saw a little water running fron the unit.
From the forums I found its a common problem when the drain gets blocked, but hopefully when the unit is removed I can check for the signs of water damage and corrosion.
If off course it looks perfect I'm lost for the cause?
regards.

ecu
yes sounds like your on the right track...make sure that the water is being guided away from the ecu harness, you will see a foam liner underneath the pollen housing cowl..this liner will at times get bent, damaged or wont block the water frombeing guided away from the firewall.and yes clean the upper water catcher located in the corner of the frame to make sure the water is draining properly. But your on the right path...

Hi 912guy,
OK, for the record, the bolt that holds the connector onto the ECU is a 5 sided security Tork T30.
I managed to remove it, then found a coating of 'white corrosion' in the box which can be wiped clean, and a little water on the board which was blown away with a hair dryer. Sprayed the board and pins with contact cleaner, rebuilt the unit, installed it in the car, and guess what!!!!!! Just the same. Same error messages and not starting.
Im just about to clean the earth points at the front of the car and the one by the pollen filter. I'll let you know what happens.
regards

thanks for the clarification, I could remember if it was 5 or 6 sides, but ouch sorry it did start, did you try the electro-motive spray by crc? This stuff is good and will most of the time clean the contacts to reastablish communication.I have the pin layout somewhere on the ecu show show which pin could be the culprit to stop comunication.I have to look for it..

Hi All,
Managed to snap off 2 of the earth points at the front of the car, drilled a couple of new holes, cleaned off the paint, and bolted them back on, the one by the pollen filter seemed ok.
Went to turn the key and yes, still the same????
Need to ID the pins out and in of the ECU to see what is and what is not connecting?
Does any one know a connector between the ECU and its feed?

Hi 912guy,
From what I can gather, If one or more inputs are not detected from any of the CAN netwok devices, then the thing just shuts down and tries to protect itself.
I hope what I need to check, is available inputs from these devices, not 100% sure what and where there are yet.
Any help wih that would be great.
regards.

ecu pins
as you can see pin 123 and 124 are on the upper left side labeled G and Y..counting from the left to the right...pay no mention to the arrow...that was for me locating the knock sensor pin on another xjr when I perform a overloop test...let me know how things work out...sorry for the poor quality picture.
