The thermostat housing is metal??

From my experience, to change stat, pasted from my car diary;

"You remove the intake duct, stuff a bunch of towels underneath the thermostat housing and around anywhere that coolant may leak. two T30 bolts on the top of the housing, and one major PITA bolt underneath that I just removed using the wrench as leverage turn by turn slowly but surely.*

Half a QT of fluid spilled out when I opened the housing, be quick. Note the thermostat orientation when you replace it. Mine looked perfect but was sure enough stuck open. Easy job. Replace coolant with Dexcool*ORANGE*from your local Autozone, REMOVE TOWELS.

Cleared codes, issues resolved."

I have heard of a metal conversion for the N/A engine but dont have details as I have an XJR as well

All the S/C engines have a metal housing and you may be able to adapt that but not sure, others may be able to assist more

The N/A engines have a plastic thermostat housing, the S/C cars are metal.

This problem also afflicts the S-Type (same engine) and there have been discussions about it in the S-Type section. Example https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...uestion-61609/

The earlier 4.0L engines do have a conversion kit to change from plastic to metal, not sure about the 4.2L though...

Have a search in the S-Type section as there are a lot more 4.2 N/A S-Types out there, maybe someone has the answer already...

EDIT

No it seems there is no metal update for the 4.2 https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...3-tips-114486/

There's no such thing as a stupid question , has anyone used a metal housing from a 4.2 super charged (xjr) engine and used it on a 4.2 lite non-super charged engine ?

I dont know of anyone that has but its best to check in the Stype forum as well

I cant see why you could not change them over but you would need some new hoses ect

PS you would need the housing for the top of the block as well as the water rail (thermostat housing)

Looking at the JEPC it looks like it will fit but cant be sure

Cheers

I'd say you're better off getting one designed for the purpose.
This is what we use on XK8s; I think the engine is the same, right?
