Check out this blog post. Scroll down a bit for a great opinion piece on the evolution and the latest restyling of the XJ series. It'll make your heart race. Articles | Auto-Scape | Automotive World In Focus- a blog by industry experts

But I'll warn you, it includes language like this regarding the X350:

"The car's fuel economy, driving dynamics, and performance trounced the rivals from BMW and Mercedes. Despite all of this the car didn’t sell up to expectations. The mainstream marketplace today, even the premium marketplace probably barely noticed the heritage features I outlined above. They fell upon closed eyes. All they saw was a car that looked dated and it was an image they didn’t associate with. The X351 which replaced the X350, is radically different from a styling point of view but not very different from an engineering point of view. Even during the recession this car has sold beyond expectations and the response has been massive."

I'm sure Tata rewarded Ian with a nice bonus check. Fat chance he's looking back to previous XJ's for styling ideas.

This comment on BMW's new styling hit home: "You instinctively know when something looks beautiful. This is a product of your upbringing and appreciating forms both aggressive and gentle in nature and all around. Chris Bangle might disagree but he would go to great lengths explaining why and how his flame surfacing works. The BMW faithful would nod like nodding dogs before trotting off trying to convince the non believers. However from our stand point if the stylist has to go to great lengths to explain a cars beauty to try to convince people we deem it a failure."
