inside the exhaust silencers

Hello, mostly out of curiosity but also because I think about trying to modify my exhaust system, I wonder about the contents of these twin silencer canisters under our cars.
Has anyone here ever opened them or seen them open? What exactly is the design inside these casings? Are the two pipes going straight through them, perforated and embedded in damping material? Is there maybe even an x-pipe hidden in one of them? Do they consist of resonance chambers where the exhaust flows of both banks combine?
I‘m reluctant to disassemble and cut mine just to find out, but in order to find out what could be done within the original parts it would be quite interesting to know what’s inside them.
So is someone here who has already put the saw to theirs and peaked inside?
