Default Keyless entry inop

Hey everyone the keyless entry on my 2004 XJ8 stopped working this morning. I pressed the lock button of the remote twice like I always do and the doors locked but I got no acknowledgement chrip with the second press of the button. Know the car doesn't respond to the remote. I only have the one remote so I can't try another one. I can lock/unlock the doors, arm and disarm the security system with the key in the door. I checked the battery it's ok and we have a generic remote tester at the dealership and the remote buttons are all working.Ther is no message concerning a door, trunk or hood open. Is it possible that the remote has to be reprogramed to the car? Can the car loose remote programing all of a sudden? Thanks for any help. George.

So your lock button works, but unlock does not, correct?
How about the other buttons - trunk and headlights?

No nothing worked with the remote but everything worked with the key in the door. I tried to reprogram the remote using instructions from Alldata and a web site I belong to the Independent Automotive Technician Network. I didn't get the proper chirps as described but when I gave up and was walking away from the car I tried the remote one more time and the car locked. Know all functions of the remote works. So I figured I must have locked up the module when I pressed the lock button twice quickly the other morning. Thanks George.

Someone else was having this problem and it turned out that the contacts under the buttons were dirty. He cleaned them and all was back to normal.

As I found out with my Rover 75 remote, the little buttons on the circuit board underneath the rubber buttons do eventualy fail requiring purchase of another remote at the usual exorbitant price. It's nearly £200 for the Rover 75 one.

Hm-m ... did a search and up popped this thread.

Just bought an '04 X-Type the other day, and one transmitter wasn't working. Bought two batteries (might as well replace both while I'm at it, don't you agree?) for five buck$ each and they worked for all of about five minutes. Now, I'm back to where I was but ten buck$ lighter.

Please tell me there's a fix besides plunking down 200 quid for a new one.

Not much help hearing "me too", but that happened to me and my '04 XJ8 on New Year's Eve. I changed the battery and nothing happened. It works nor irratically but the steering wheel adjustment has disappeared, which is a pity cos I love that function.

I've given up on my keyless entry and use the key for get into the car all the time now. My domestic cars have no problems whatsoever.

To say I'm VERY annoyed would be an understatement.

When I first got my 04 XJ8, the dealer replaced the key remotes on two different occasions. There was a recall and a TSB. Since, I have had no problems.
