Location Of Engine Number?
Dear Forum,
Checked thoroughly...No posts found?
Where is the engine number to be found, please?
(a pic/diagram would be great)
The Workshop Manual says:
Surely Jaguar would not have put it somewhere where it cannot be seen!
However, I cannot see anything back there...Has anybody else tried and succeeded, please?

Hi EsRay
I haven't searched for my engine number as it is noted on my build sheet (vehicle enquiry) available from a dealer or independent.
I gave them my VIN and they printed out a three page summary of all the serial numbers and build options etc. It may be possible to use a mirror, or a tiny camera on a flexible gooseneck.
Oh, and 'Radiance Mica' - Maroon? more like 'Toffee Apple', it looks good enough to eat!

VIN is required to be clearly visible but I've not read of any part of the World where engine number must also be easily seen.
It will always be somewhere on the cylinder block as this is the core of the engine. They have never been simple to see since the days of the straight six Jaguar engines. On the early V8's, engine number is at the front next to the thermostat housing but this is no easier to see than your later V8 at the rear of the block.

I emailed Jaguar in the UK and they stated that it is a stamping in the middle of the Vee at the rear of the engine (it is not)? the Workshop Manual says it is on a lug behind the engine mounting left hand side? xalty (thanks) tells me that it is next to the block drain plug, left side (I have asked him if he is able to tell me how I view it)?
I am trying to find out if my engine has been swopped at some time...My VIN says I have a 3.5 V8, but when I ordered upper inlet manifold (plenum) gaskets using my VIN, I was sent gaskets clearly very, very different to the 8 individual green silicon gaskets my car is fitted with? The UK supplier said that they were definitely the correct gaskets for my VIN? The replacements were four inlets combined to each gasket and those inlets did not fit mine? My gaskets appear to be those for a 4.2 V8 (I think)?
Jaguar have given me the engine number linked to my VIN.

Thanks xalty,
Nearer 200 bucks by the time I ship to Dubai!
I have given the bolts a bit of a 'snug-up' and put it back together now; if I get problems, obviously I will have to sort it!
Main issue now is that I appear to have a different engine to that listed under my VIN?
I need to find out whether I view my engine number via removal of the wheel arch or removal of the underbody tray...Don't want to be messing around too long in the
50 degrees C heat in my basement car parking space!!

Well, thanks to help from this forum I found my engine number and it matches my VIN; so, according to my VIN I have a long-wheelbase 3.5 litre V8? My registration here in Dubai describes my car as a 4.2 V8??
However, the upper (plenum) inlet manifold gaskets I orderd by VIN number are completely wrong for my car...So wrong that the 'holes' do not match my inlets! (see post #10 above); the manifold (and its gaskets) fitted to my car appear to be those fitted to a 4.2?
These are the gaskets that will fit my car but not my VIN: https://www.ebay.com/itm/16469697040....m-1#vi-ilComp
My VIN says that although my car is 2005 registered, my engine is from 6th July 2004?
Anyone have any ideas about this, please...May not seem too important, but on the other hand, I just spent money (plus shipping from the UK) on gaskets that fit my VIN but not my car?
Could get expensive and wasteful...
