Default makes overheating sounds & smells

My 2004 Jaguar XJ8 makes over heating sounds & smells. But temp. Gauge nevers goes past middle no warning lights. Both fans don't run. 1 fan runs when ac is on. Is this a bad temp.sensor. or what. Doesn't leak. Exspan.tank makes noise. Smells hot.

Firstly, WELCOME to the real world of mtoring.

Please do an intro in the "New Members Area......" when time permits.

My sugestions from afar.

IT IS OVERHEATING.

The gauges are rubbish at best.

I recommend the thermostat, AND pressure cap be replaced, NOW, before anymore driving.

Not sure on USA market X350 cars of the bleeding procedure, so a quick search on here should be a first stop.

The water pump impellor may have gone AWOL, as the 4ltr early units had that issue, but I reckon that the 3.5/4.2 are just fine.

Of course it could something else, but that is the first 2 items on any car with that issue, regardless of the badging.

I get some customers complaining of coolant smells but the car is bone dry according to them. My first suggestion is to let her cool all the way, then pressure test it, you will be very surprised that at times the DCCV VALVE may have a tiny crack, or a coolant return line may have a slight leak that dries fast due to size of leak, or maybe a slight pin crack at the auxiliary pump, or many other places...But pressure test her and you may get a answer... also does the coolant fans stay on when you park her and take the key out? If the fans remain running then you may have a sticking thermostat. Unplug the coolant temp sensor while its running, it should peg out to max,if it doesn't it is faulty. It is the grey little connector upfront into the thermostat housing . I hope this helps....good luck!

Fan should run when ac is running to cool the condensor. Your coolant fan has three seperate connections, they are a little hard to get to and they plug in below radiator shroud. To access you must remove the lower skid plate right behind the lower radiator..Just check the connector harness to make sure you have 12 volts, can be a bad resistor. You really need a good scan that can access the subsystems and not just the ecu and tcm. I always suggest if you have a Jaguar and plan on keeping it,buy sdd or at least a good scanner.I know it is costly but it will pay for itself in time. Also make sure no air pocket are in the coolant system.I doubt it because the coolant fans would stay on a lot immediately after a cold start.also make sure the fans are cycling...

Hello and thanks , let me first start by saying I used a wide range of scanners but the ones that actually have actuation of a component cost thousands of dollars...so I am sure you don't want to go that route to fix a part that costs a few hundred...Here is my suggestion, you can take a regular 12v power supply like a car battery, go to harbor freight, buy some lead clamps, and wire and make a power connector to troubleshoot. Just connect the clamps to the battery, and the other side to the female harness plug of the fan. It should power up, if it doesn't then fan motor is bad. If you have checked the fuses, and relays and they are good, and fan powers up then you will most likely have a bad resistor.

But here are some I use: Autel Maxysis(2400.00),Launch x431(1400.00),Launch creader 8(250.00),OTC(1600.00), Jaguar SDD, and IDS(1000.00 including the cost of jlr mongoose and laptop), and LAUNCH GDS(2000.00), BMW GT1 /Progman insta(1000.00 including laptop and interfaces),and looking at a Autoland scientech 2(6000.00)
