Default my baby is sick

Hi Guys took my xj8 out yesterday ,and she has developed a missfire .all was going fine with my usually feather light touch on the throttle (i never hammer it unless i want an ocassional bit of excitment ) due to petrol cost ,and respect for the old girl.
Anyway i decided to push it a bit and she died .Shes fine on gentle acceleration ,but as soon as i put the pedal to the floor it seems to be gulping air but nothing else .No missfires on tick over sweet as a nut. no overheating.
Same symptoms when out of gear on return home . pressing pedal hard to the floor out of gear she sounds like shesbeing starved of fuel
Any ideas guys ?
Cheers

air mass meter sensor could be the reason.

It sounds like maybe one of your fuel pumps is not working. These cars have two of them, and you will get no fault codes if one goes bad. One will be enough to give enough fuel if you are "pottering" about, but as soon as you hit the pedal it will be starved of fuel......just a guess so wait for one of the techs to chime in!

Has your engine check light come on / any fault codes?

It would help if you told us what car you have; you are on the X350 forum, which is for the big aluminium saloons from 2003, which were available with 3 litre 6cyl, 3.5 and 4.2 litre V8, and 4.2 litre V8 Supercharged engines, with the 2.7 litre tubocharged diesel coming along around 2006.
