Default Need KMH over MPH cluster 2009 VDP

Would anyone happen to have a speedometer / instrument cluster for Canadian MOT standard whereby KMH is over MPH. I am looking to buy or trade for the same cluster which I have in U.S standard. I have enclosed a pic of a U.S. cluster which I have to trade if interested.

I have tirelessly searched ebay and Google all over the world for the kmh model to no avail.

Thanks in advance folks

Chris

Jaguar call them instrument packs (IP) if that helps.

Chris,

The Instrument Pack is a programmable module and not plug & play. There's also 8 different part numbers for Canada specification Instrument Packs:

(click on the image to enlarge it)

As you can see from the above Parts Catalogue extract, the IP's are VIN range related.

Hi Graham,

I forgot who dropped the term cluster to me. In any case, based on the info from the EPC, and my VIN # above H31000, my part # for the instrument pack is C2C37033. It's just one hard item to find so far.

Cheers,

Chris

Could you perhaps silkscreen a new background for the speedo part of the instrument pack?

There are a number of DIY articles out there on the technique.

"The Instrument Pack is a programmable module and not plug & play."

Graham, could you elaborate on this sentence. I understand that the whole pack must be replaced when the led's go or one of the instruments e.g. rpm, goes awry. What was it that I said that made you use that sentence? I'm just trying to understand your point and thank you for your help and insight.

I looked into this when I imported my XJR from the UK to Switzerland as the speedo is MPH with KMH subscale. Turns out the Swiss accepted this because it was dual scale so I didn't take it any further.

I contacted Lockwood International in the UK Lockwood MPH to Km/h white replacement Dials, speedo meters & gauges as they do custom dials & conversion kits for that sort of thing.

They don't have a kit to suit an X350, and I would have had to send them my dials (or complete instrument cluster) and they would have made a template from that. I also would have needed to supply photos of the KMH scale I wanted.

As it would have been a complete new product for them, they wanted £180 plus shipping & it would have taken several weeks. A standard product would only be around £80.

I didn't take it any further since I didn't need it, but now if there are a few people interested it would reduce the cost somewhat.

Only thing is the XJR dials have SUPERCHARGED written on the Tacho & Fuel/Temp gauges, the XJ8/VDP won't have that, but the rest of the dials are the same for V8's it shouldn't be a problem.

Group buy?

Also, I found a wrecker in Holland who had some instrument clusters just in KMH for euro-spec cars (with & without SUPERCHARGED on them), but they wanted €250 for the cluster & no warranty. As Graham says I would have had to re-program the cluster for my car (which I could do), but there is no way to change the odometer reading (dealers can do it with SDD, but those of us with SDD without subscription can't do it).

So i would have had to disassemble the cluster anyhow & it would have been more/less the same price as going with Lockwood.

You've got it.

I was thinking of replacing the calibrated plastic dial with one from a broken IP but yours is a much better solution.

There are a number of modules in your vehicle. These are the primary ones:

Need KMH over MPH cluster 2009 VDP-x350-communications-network.jpg

(click on the image to enlarge it)

They are interconnected through three module communications networks:

1. CAN (controller area network)
2. SCP (standard corporate protocol)
3. ISO (international standards organisation)

The networks can be connected to the Jaguar approved diagnostic system or scan tool by the DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector).

The Instrument Pack (also known as an instrument cluster module or ICM) is connected to the CAN and SCP communication networks and forms a 'gateway' between the networks. The networks share information, allowing sensors to serve more than one network.

In order to communicate, the individual modules have to be programmed to recognise each other. This is done using the Jaguar Dealer Diagnostic system although some independents have similar dealer level diagnostics which can do this setup.

The result is you can't just take a new Instrument Pack (or one programmed to another vehicle) and plug it in. It won't work until it's programmed to your vehicle.

Thank you Graham,

I was told two different stories, one was what you said, being the dealer would have to reprogram the pack, and the other, was that the car's computer would just send the existing settings from the old pack to the new.

Doc,
No need for any software update, just push the mph/kph button on the trip computer.
You only need a new decal if you want to change the analogue gauge.

My dial has both MPH and KMH

The KMH is small and hard to read the MPH is huge and easy to read

In Australia its all KMH so being used to KMH speedo's with large KMH writing

I end up doing 70 then I realise I am doing 70 MPH instead of 70 KMH

The XJ8 just floats so nice and is so quiet compared to the old XJR6

That's why I would like a KMH dial just makes driving a bit easier

At the moment I just have my GPS plugged in and use it as a speedo then at least I know I am doing the right speed

Actually, silkscreening is the harder option these days. Printable clear acetate adhesive sheets run through a colour printer would work better. It can be bought in letter size sheets in gloss, semi-matte or matte at any business supply store. Photoshop would let someone create any design desired. Backlit numbers and marks are achieved by using no ink, or less ink for those areas.
