New here and looking for a XJR
I have always liked the jaguars since my dad and I restored a 74 xj. I have been looking for a XJR for the extra power of the supercharged 4.0. My family is getting bigger and the mustang is getting tight on space so I have been thinking about a XJR. Looking for a few answers before I dive in.
What years should I stay away from?
What kind of power can they make with out opening the engine up?
Are there any after market exhaust systems for them?
Has any one plugged the silencing holes on the supercharger to get more noise like the mustang cobra?
Any plug and play tuners like a ODBII?

Thought I would pop in and say Welcome to the forum. We are so far ahead of the rest of the world others are probably finishing their Christmas Lunch. (4.30pm 26th here)
XJR is a great choice in my opinion...guessing you haven't driven one yet if you are looking for more power than standard. They rarely come on the market here and I am no expert on them.
I'm sure more relevant help will arrive...Good Luck.

What year starts the 4.2? I want the luxury but I want a performance car as well more noise for me is ok.
Any one know how much power can be tweaked out of this mighty jag?
Thanks guys. I am sure I will be here to stay. I sold off my Lincoln mark VIII in search for something with more room and power.

The 4.2 litre V8 started in the X350 model series. These were the first of the aluminium XJ saloons, and the first modern aluminium cars made by Jaguar, (there were, of course, the 200-odd XK120 cars of 1948/49).
So you would be looking at an XJ from 2004-2009. I'm not sure if any cars got to the US in 2003, anyways I think they would be called Model Year 2004 in the USA. I think you'd find the performance more than adequate. There isn't a huge amount you can do to improve the engine, but no doubt there are some ingenious chaps in the USA who can do so.
Of course, you'll get all the luxury you need, although maybe not all you'll want. Jaguar were a bit behind the times on ICE equipment, but even so, it's still pretty good. I think the large-screen type sat-nav was an option, not standard.
Main thing is not the goodies, but the baddies. Has car been maintained correctly and carefully, by an owner who cherished his car ? You don't want one that has been neglected by an uncaring oaf.

Often wondered why some are trying to get more horses, unless you are thinking some track days,
'Any one know how much power can be tweaked out of this mighty jag?' No I don't know that.
What does appeal to me is the way Jaguar finds all the horses instantly. Whilst my 'Tickford' LTD has the power, with the two cars side by side the Jag leaves it for dead with a smaller engine,(and better fuel economy) it is just a refined package.
If you haven't driven one yet I would be interested in your thoughts when you do and the comparison to the Mustang.
Cheers,Neil

I have a few I have found around most are 1999-2002 in my price range. I may have to up it for a 04 for the 4.2. I found one local to me to go test drive this coming week. I am a hot rodder and I have never been able to leave any thing stock. So entering a world of higher class cars I wanted to make sure I was not getting something that cant be modified. I will let you know What I think.

Well first you need to decide if you want the 98-03 (X308) style or the 04 and up style (X350, X358). They're two completely different cars.
On the older models you can get 550 hp and more with a twin screw. It all depends on how much you want to spend. Not sure what's the most horsepower that's been had on the newer ones, but it's less because there's no twin screw set-up available yet.
