Default New Hose Clamps or Not?

I've seen several references to Norma clamps being reusable. What about those & other clamps? I'm inclined to get new. What say you? If the answer is to replace, any suggestions as to where the best place is to buy? I will check the original clamps to see if there are any size specs on them.

Thanks and best,

Steve S.

Default New OEM style clamps. Period.

I'm guilty of replacing the OEM constant tension clamp. When I got into the snake pit of the cooling hoses a couple of years ago I replaced every worm-screw clamp with constant tension. Why? The worm-screw puts its most tension on one spot of the hose and the connector. Constant tension does just what the name implies. To make the OEM replacements easier take a look at these:

Thanks, RSA. It is my plan to affix the new hoses with the original, My question is: Should I reuse or replace?

I bought a set of hose clamp tools which included the one you sent. It really is nice, especially the ratcheting feature.

Best,

Steve S.

In my experience if you replace hoses and reuse the spring clamps
they can leak and you can't tighten them hence you have to drain the coolant
again and fit a clamp that you can tighten.
The spring clamps are desinged to save pennies and seconds in the factory IMO

The Norma connectors can be reused but the orginal O ring flattens and must be replaced
before re use.

Thanks, Meirion1. That settles that. I checked a couple of the spring clamps and couldn't find any markings. I will check to see if I can find a list of clip sizes & will caliper the old ones to see if I can find the correct replacements.

Unless I've overlooked the, I don't see any O ring with the Normas unless they are on the nipple.

Best,

Steve S.

The constant tension spring clamps are designed especially for the plastic/resin pipes and connections.

Worm drive type clamps are not ROUND when tightened (they can 'flat-spot' on the drive section as rsa stated) and can deform the plastic/resin connector.

I use the spring clamps on ALL plastic/resin connections.
Metal connectors can use worm drive without concern.

Steve
The O ring is right inside the female Norma coupling

Thanks. I think I am using the wrong term. I was thinking of the smaller clamps that are clicked together in a peculiar fashion. They unclip easy enough. Don't know about reattaching yet.

Is the Norma the one connecting the valley hose?

Best, Steve S

Yazz.. first pair I bought I thot "I already have Kelly Forceps, so I'll probably never actually USE these..."

.. but any tool I don't already have at least two of MUST be acquired.. at least for test. "Law of nature" for tool-******, izzat?

Handier than they looked. Now I have 3 sets: straight, 45 and 90 degree in long, longer, and really, really REALLY long.

And almost never need the cable-pull 'remote' hose clamp pliers.

Learn and live....

AFIK the only Norma couplings on the Jag are:
two on the heating flow and return in the engine bay
and one onthe bottom of the plastic head tank.

One thing that I have learned:
On the Norma connectors
To disconnect pull the spring clip to the open position
and pull male out

To connect
push the spring clip to the closed position
and push the male into the female and it will click shut
(very satisfying) lol

A smidgeon of silicone grease on the o ring helps
