It would help if you posted in the right forum for your car, which is an XJ6 Series 2. This forum is for the XJ saloons built between 2003 and 2009. Anyway, as I have removed the tanks on an XJ6 Series 3, I can appreciate your problem.
You need to: -
1. Remove left and right side quarter panels, secured by screws and bolts. There are also securing screws at the back of the rear wheel arches, normally covered with underseal, so you can't see them ! You also have to remove the rear bumper to get at the bolts, they are underneath the side bumpers
2. Remove circular plate at back of wheel arch and disconnect the fuel pump
3. Unscrew small plug in middle of large plug at bottom of tanks and drain the tanks. NO SMOKING !!
4. Unscrew large plug, and set aside. Check gauze for crud and clean
5. Remove complete filler cap assembly. This is a real PITA as it needs a lot of effort to pull off once the securing screws are removed and there is no space to work to get a lveer in. A soaking with releas fluid for a few days will help.
6. Remove panel at bottom of trunk and detach all tubing and fuel changeover valve.
7. Remove cross-tube running from bottom inside face ot tanks that supplies the changeover valve
8. Remove rear lamp assemblies.
9. Remove fuel level tramsmitters
10. unbolt securing screws on inside faces of trunk
11. Undo vertical securing screw that holds the tank up in the tank chamber, This bolt is what you secure the tank with first when replacing then do all the other installation steps.
That's about it, although I may have left something out.
If you can get this and your post moved to the XJ6 Series 1,2, & 3 forum it would help others to assist
