I think you mentioned the biggest thing. You really need to DIY the car for it to work out. As others have said I find the modern Jaguar's to be good cars. But they are complicated and very low in production numbers.
It's MUCH harder to wring the problems out of a car that sells 20K units a year compared to 300K-400K units a year.
This list is another key to knowing what your in for. The cars are fairly old and most if not all the problems have surfaced by this time.

These cars can be expensive, but you're getting into an older car that sold for 60k+ for a fraction of its original cost. And if well maintained, it's a head turner, as they don't style cars like this anymore. It'll be good if your handy and can find a good Indy mechanic who specialize in Jags. Check the regional forums for suggested mechanics in your area, and get a PPI.
