Hello, I'm new here...just purchased a 2005 XJR.
Loved XJR's since 1999.
Anyways one of my headlights is out. Not the main on, the secondary one, so the pale orange one nearest to the grill on the upper portion of the basket ( if this makes sense) I removed the plastic covering the front section. Then my ambitions were foiled when I realised I didn't know how to proceed. Any input?

The cover is from the engine bay, not the headlight unit itself.. like behind the grill but in front of the engine. So.. I've had my fair share of mustangs, and the headlight unit in that case clearly has a wire running to each bulb, twist the "bulb" housing and it pulls right out. In this vehicle it wasn't that apparent. I did see a group of wires going to the housing.. but perhaps to change a bulb the entire housing needs removal? I'm lost: (

You do not have to remove the entire housing. If your hands are small enough you can twist and remove the bulb holder with the bulb in it. It is fiddly and can be tough to initially turn the bulb holder. Some people recommend taking off the front bumper assembly so that you can remove the whole housing from the front and that certainly makes changing bulbs much easier.
In replacing/upgrading my bulbs I accidentally misaligned the tube holding the driving lite bulb and got it stuck in the wrong position. I had to take off the bumper assembly to get at it. When I did that I found that I had not put the plastic covers back properly as I had not hooked back into a lower metal clamp on two housings, left and right.
I hope you enjoy your 2005 XJR. I have found it to be the most satisfying car I have ever owned. So far I have done all maintenance and upgrades myself and that includes, oil/filter change, transmission oil/pan flush and change, spark plugs, supercharger oil change, rear differential oil change etc.
