Default False or not, here it is.

However, as has been in effect posted, it's up to the software to ask the elm to request the car for data and much of the software just asks for generic OBD II data - as you'd expect.

The elm327 can do far more (see detailed doc available on their site) but only if asked. Hardly any software does

I gather Torque Pro can be taught to do it but haven't tried. I'd get SDD/IDS + Mongoose and then you don't have to go teaching...
I agree that an SDD + Mongoose (or the hacked "Mangoose") is the way to go, I was simply reporting that with Torque I get this message - I can in fact get and clear codes with it as I went on to do later. See screenshot of the actual message - I can't comment on whether it's "false" but it does come up so something is non standard there. I have not seen anything like it and I have used Torque on at least a couple dozen vehicles.

It's a bug in the Torque software or the interfacing device (elm327?) I reckon. Some hiccup with timing of signals or software trying to do stuff a bit out of spec. It happens

Default ELM device no longer reads the codes

I have had the ELM device and used it very successfully to read OBD codes on a previous 2004 XJ I had between 2005 and 2016. Now I have a 2006 xjl and the torque software I've always used now says that ECU codes have been blocked. I can't get any readings of any P codes from it at all

It's not the car model, though it could be a fault on your specific car (bad fuse/wiring/etc). It's either the hardware OBD device or the software you're using.

Hi rudelover2,

I have encountered a 2006 XJ8 with a CAN issue that prevented all of my scan tools from communicating with the ECM, IC, ABS and one other module, the EPB I think. None of my versions of SDD could communicate with those modules, nor could my other third-party tools (including a couple of high end ones by Autel and Launch). The only DTCs that seemed to be relevant indicated problems with CAN communications, but not all of the modules were on the same branch of the CAN so I had no clear diagnostic clue. I cleaned several of the CAN connectors and ground points associated with those control modules but had no success in restoring communcation with any of them. The owner took the car to the local Jaguar dealership and they had the same problem and recommended a new ECM, which the owner has not yet tried.

All that to say, it might be worth finding a shop with SDD or a high end third-party scan tool like an Autel MaxiSys or AutoEnginuity with the Jaguar enhancement to see if they can communicate with all of your modules, especially the ECM and IC. If not, you may have a problem with either a module, one or more ground points, or a fuse or the CAN wiring (as JagV8 mentioned).

Cheers,

Don
