Default oil warning light question?

Hi, I took my Super 8 Portfolio out of storage last week and while driving home the check engine light came on, I thought no big deal, until I heard a little pinging noise when accelerating. I made I home, checked oil dip stick and it was dry with no sign of oil. I had a pin hole leak on one of the oil cooler lines.

My question is: Is there an oil pressure and/or a low oil warning light on this car? Because if there is, they never came on, just the check engine light did!!!

I can’t be leave they built these warnings just into the check engine light. Does anybody think I may have cut my engine life in half or worse by not thinking anything was seriously wrong just because the check engine light was on and no other lights were on, until I heard engine pinging???

Was that "Check Engine" light a picture of a little oil can ? You may be lucky and get away with it, but much depends on how far and fast you drove that car. How much oil did you have to add to get the level correct ? Driving an engine with very little oil is usually a quick way to wreck it.

It was an “engine symbol”, not the “oil can”, and it came on the same time I heard the engine pinging a bit. Maybe oil was getting on a senor that is part of the check engine circuit. But I’m out of town right now and the new oil cooler line will not be here for 9 days...So when I get back I will post the check engine codes and see how much oil was left in the engine.

Fraser: Does that “oil can” symbol come on when the oil is low or the oil pressure is low or both?
