One beep when put in reverse

One beep when put in reverse
My newly - acquired 06 XJ8-L emits one beep when I put it into reverse. Is this a "bug" or a "feature"? When I was in the dealer having a key programmed, they put on the invoice: "Park distance system may need work. Sensors beep when vehicle is placed in reverse." But if so, I am not sure I want to pay (undoubtedly) hundreds of dollars for a remedy. One beep, I can put up with.

There is a button in the overhead console that will light up red when your rear parking assist is off.
When you place the car in reverse and there is a fault in the parking assist system it will beep about 3 seconds and the light will go on if there is a fault.
If you only have rear parking assist and IF it is the module I have a spare working module.
PM if interested.
If you have the 4 circular sensors in the front bumper as well as rear you have an 8 channel module in the trunk. If only 4 sensors in the rear bumper then its a 4 channel.
A single sensor gone bad will cause others not to work.

Also if the module is bad same thing.
I had the same issue recently. I went ahead and bought a 4 channel module for a very low price just to check the rear sensors and they
all work with the 4 channel module in place. So I purchased an 8 channel unit for $30 and all is fine.
The 8 channel modules seem to go for $100 on Ebay however I found one for $49 and free shipping and offered $30 which was accepted.

In my 2005 XJR it is in the trunk by the rear left corner of the spare tire when looking in from the rear.
There is quite a bit of info in this forum about checking the sensors but it seems to me to be quite long winded which is why I chose the easy route and I was lucky.
If the sensors are not operating because one is out it makes things a lot more complicated.

Look at the above.
Also the below item number on Ebay.

My sensors worked just by holding my hand in front of them when in reverse gear engine off key in position II once I replaced the module.

Well, I was mistaken ..... I thought I had front and rear sensors, but it turns out that the front "sensors" are actually the nozzles for the headlight washers. I had been wondering how these "sensors" could work, since they point straight up !
I guess that simplifies my problem. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of corrosion or moisture in the boot/trunk, so perhaps the more likely culprit is a bad sensor.
In the thread referenced immediately above, there is discussion of a bad speaker, I guess to beep when obstacles are too close. If that fails, can the system detect that failure?
Somehow, these cars are bit more complicated than my grandfather's '48 Chevy !

There was/is absolutely no corrosion in my trunk and the original module looks new however it was bad.
If the speaker is bad, and that is the only issue, the system will work but you will not know it.
I do not think you get an error message. If the red lite goes on in the overhead button I believe it is either a sensor or the module or the wiring somewhere.

I have had my car for two months and have not spent any time trying to figure the system out. I have front and rear sensors. When I place it in reverse I get one long beep. But the system seems to work. As I back toward an object I get a series of quicker beeps until the beep is constant and I'm fairly close to the object. I sometimes get a beep when approaching a toll booth at around 15 mph (I have ez-pass so I don't stop). Not sure what the beep is for when placed into reverse.

Your rear sensor system sounds fine.

Well I managed to install the 4 channel module instead of the 8 channel module in error.
Should not do work when rushed, by wife, and tired!
I did not drive the car for several days.
When I realized my mistake I swapped in the new one I purchased and lo and behold I had the error again.
My JLR SDD did not pick up any error codes at all.
So I replaced all 4 front sensors, bought used on Ebay, and now I have a working system finally.
Only one sensor was bad but I could only find a "bundled" set of 4 on Ebay for a good price.

Well, my situation is curiouser and curiouser.
I bought another Park Assist model on eBay, and installed it. Same fault signal, no difference.
Then I also bought an iCarsoft I930 advanced scanner, model specific to Jaguar and LandRover. Has option to look at Parking Assist. Tried that this morning.
The message I got was, "Fault in communication with vehicle ECU" Tried to delete fault. Wouldn't/couldn't do it.
So I wonder, now what? Buy another park assist module on the theory that the first replacement was bad? (they go for fairly cheap $$ on eBay) Throw myself on the tender mercies of the Jaguar dealer? Forget about it and just live with the disabled backup warning?
Frustrating !
