Only 1 remote key how to pair a second key on a 2006 Xjrl
Hello. My name is Gary and I am a new member as of today. Hi everyone. My problem is trying to get my new key to pair up with the car. I only had one key so I went to Jaguar dealer and had a new remote key made. It will turn the car into stage 3 on the ignition but it will not start engine. Any ideas ,folks. Thanks.

Hi,
the common key has two functions, remote control and unlocking the immobilizer. Both has to be programmed.
Programming the remote control is an easy DIY job, look for tutorials on youtube. (FOB programming X350)
Programming the transponder which has to communcate with the immobilzizer controler (part of EMU) will probably need a dealer. According to my recently made expirience (XJ 2008/9) regarding this matter in addition to the original SDD diagnostic software, you need also a current dealer license.
The dealer who sold you the key should have done that. It's not a big deal, takes about 30 mn.

I would guess the dealer thought that he/they could program the second key to the car using the procedure for registering the 'remote' function of the key into the car's system. That will work with a single operative key fob.
However there's a second separate device in the fob, a transponder (like the I/D microchip you can have injected into a cat or dog's scruff) which the car reads to enable the ignition. It requires two keys (transponders) already registered in the car's system before further transponders can be registered using the simple technique that works for the remote. If you only have one fob that will start the engine then the only way to register further transponders is to use a computer with the IDS/SDD system plugged into the car.
I guess the dealer didn't realise that. As they supplied the new key you should go back, with the car (can't be done without the car present), and ask them to do it properly ... as they should have done in the first place ... didn't they check it at the time ?

How much did you pay for the key?
Also, can I program a second master key at home (black, with buttons), if I have only one master key, and one valet (green) key?
I'm sure the car had before at least another master key, and I believe it should be registered in the system.
Is there any walkthrough on how to do this? I've done it before multiple times on various Toyotas (programmed both transponders and remotes), but I'm not familiar with the Jaguar process.
Thanks!

Gary probably has a key made by now. But if not, the attachment in the "how to sticky" section by LCMJaguar helped me:
