Default opinions about Tranny fluid

Hi Gang,

going to get tranny fluid/filter changed. I have a leak so needs servicing.

The Indie Jag mechanic says that the ZF Lifeguard 6 below is not the Jaguar Trans fluid he uses, which is C2C8432.

6 Speed oil change kit Jaguar

from what I read on some threads here I thought it was?

Lifeguard 6 is the fluid originally used in your car. Lots of discussion about what fluid to use in this forum.

When I went thru the trouble of changing my own fluid I figured that I would use the original fluid since my transmission had lasted 102,000 miles with no trouble on Lifeguard 6. I did a complete flush. LF 6 is a bit more expensive but not that much if you search on the Internet.

According to 12 page ZF Parts Service Information Oil change kit for automatic transmissions 5HP/6HP that I found on this site, "Use only the specified ZF LifeguardFluid ..."

Every 80K to 120K km or after 8 years.

That is what I'm trying to determine. If the oil in the link above is the "specified" ZF oil. My tech says it is generic as it applies to the transmission in BMW, etc...

The Jaguar fluid is the fluid from ZF.
Jaguar DOES NOT make their own fluid.
The Lifeguard 6 has the correct additives for the 'whoop' sound fix.
I have BOTH C2C8432 and Lifeguard 6 on my shelf.
They LOOK, FEEL and SMELL the SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They ARE the same.

That is almost certainly LG6 re-labeled 'Jaguar' and suitably re-priced.

LG6 is used in their ZF 6HP boxes by all the following (according to ZF):

Audi /VW Oil No. G 055005 A1 / A2 / A6
Bentley Oil No. PY112995PA
BMW Oil No. 8322 0142516
Hyundai Oil No. 040000C90SG
Jaguar Oil No. Jaguar Fluid 8432
Land Rover Oil No. TYK500050
Maserati Oil No. 231603

LifeGuard 6 is almost certainly manufactured by Shell, since the actual ZF specification was originally Shell M1375.4 before ZF began branding its own fluids.

There has been some discussion that Ford Mercon SP, which Ford uses in its own vehicles with the ZF 6HP26, is identical to ZF LifeGuard 6. But the published specs are slightly different, and both ZF and California Transmission Supply Co. have told me that the Mechatronic units used in the Fords may be programmed for different slippage and other fluid characteristics. I've posted their entire responses somewhere in one of the many long threads on this subject (maybe in the S-Type forum).

Personally, I chose LifeGuard 6 and found the best price on 12 quarts at theCTSC.com. It's also worth checking bavauto.com since the same fluid is used in the BMW versions of the 6HP26.

Cheers,

Don

Hey Patrick, some of the threads regarding Trans fluid mention a difference between the fluid make up (viscosity, additives etc..) between car brand for the ZF LG6.

Something to do with how Jag programs the tranny to operate with its version of the fluid.

That being said, i am changing the pan/filter and what ever falls out of the transmission ( which I understand to partially change the original oil) and want to know if it is ok to mix the original fluid with the ZF LG 6 non jag labeled stuff.

Different oils mixed in the transmission do not tend to play well together. If you're going to move off the Jag recommended brand as others have done, have an indie do a complete flush and replace all of the oil.

There are several auto manufacturers using our tranny, including Ford. If it's in a Ford, they're using Mercon fluid.

The difference is in the software and how it's programmed to run in a particular car.

We each seem to take a stand one way or the other. On some forums, I've read some rather passionate pleas with some folks alluding to wrath of God/ end of days type thinking.

Some add Mercon or another brand and say they have zero problems. Others say they have minor problems. I haven't heard anyone say they burned up their tranny or impacted their mileage. It all appears largely anecdotal.

But at the very least, if you change brands, replace it all IMHO.

Let us know the outcome, assuming you survive the test drive.

As Don B stated I found the best price for LF 6 at theCTSC.com.

For something that will last for 50,000 miles I was not about to take even a slight risk for what really is not a lot of money. Also I have to believe mixing different types of fluid is probably not the best idea.

I also believe that diluting old oil with new oil is not in the best interests of the transmission which is why I did a complete flush.

My old oil at 102,000 was filthy.

10.53 quarts I believe including cooler. As best I could make out I got out over 10 quarts. Not absolutely sure since I spilled some during the flush. The pressure of fluid coming out of the transmission cooler line caught me by surprise.

Yep, I think it's 10 liter capacity (around 10.6 quarts?). I think I read that a flush will push through 14 quarts to get to "clean" but betting you can get by with 12 if your careful.

Jackra, which line is the pressure line? Top or bottom? Do you have a write up somewhere on your DIY flush?

I'm looking to do the same and not a fan of the 6 quart fill, leaving 4 quarts of old oil to blend with.

I had my wife help me do the flush. She started and stopped the engine as I flushed about a quart at a time and filled a quart at a time. I did not want to risk doing more than that. About a quart would come out in less than 2 seconds.

When I finished the whole thing I took the car on a drive with several hard acceleration spurts and jacked the car up again on 4 corners level and checked the fluid level at the correct temp again. I was able to add several ozs before it dribbled out at 48-50 degrees.

update - Changed the tranny fluid/pan etc... Actually need 8 liters of fluid. I guess the leak had let 1 liter drain. The slip i felt from first to second is gone. Had to replace all the bolts, some were seized and the Tech had a heck of a time getting them out without sheering them off. All in with Tech labour, sourced parts (ZF) and our lovely 13% HST in Ontario was $925CDN, or approx $694 USD. Hopefully last time I will need to deal with it.

Motor on!
