Options: New Set of Struts!
I need a set of new suspension struts for my 07 XJR.
Your comments welcomed
Here are current options (best price I found this morning for set of four NEW struts):
OEM Bilstein B4 Air Arnott Spring Arnott New Chinese
$ 5,096 $ 2,600 $ 1,750 $ 1,005 $ 1,000
(Quick summary: I completely rebuilt the suspension last summer, and made the big mistake of using rebuilt struts. After no less than 10 of these fitted and five failing, I am moving on. and I strongly suggest against anyone using "rebuilt" jag struts - caveat emptor!
- The only correct option for XJR owners is factory OEM (C2C41354/1346) sport struts, The Bilsteins are OE comfort shocks. This fact, BTW, is what lead me down the sorry dead end "rebuilt" route
- CATS is only enabled on OEM and Bilstein options, if you care
- I am maybe leaning toward the Arnott spring conversion (so Suzanne would maybe eventually sorta' consider driving the Jag ever again)
- There may be other X350 spring conversions, but none that I could find any good press on
- Most of the really cheap EBay struts are "rebuilt". The "new chinese" struts look actually maybe new, brought to you by the same folks who supply all four new Camry car struts for $90.( I wouldn't try 'em..., but who knows?)
- My beautiful '07 XJR is worth maybe $10K on a sunny day...$5.1K in struts is a non starter

R M T rebuilds stock Jaguar shocks, rebuilding the ones sent in, takes a day, or less, longer than trading yours in.
Sent the ones off of the 04 in, & had them rebuilt, instead of trading them in as cores.
As the 04 was from the Carolina's, & shocks came off like the Arnott video. So far all is well, magic carpet ride.
The 07's old shocks, are now setting in the boxes, the R M T shocks were shipped in, by the wall, out of the way.

Forgot to mention price in last post;
$505 paid for everything, including the shipping both ways. (for two fronts)
My shocks still functioned, but had the normal slight leaking of air, from the top before rebuilding
By rebuilding the Jaguar shocks, your supposed to keep all the standard Jaguar features, lowering the car at 105 mph, etc.
Too many police with radar, as well as camera's, sending out tickets. With a picture of the rear license plate, your speed, & a big fine.
Point being i have not had it that fast YET, to know if it lowers itself, but they do give you a smooth ride, and sort of float, on a good piece of road.
Would like to get it out west where there is long distances to cover between towns, & people drive at 90 or better on the highways.

I like the RMT but doubt you'll see their $100 rebate
Put in RMT replacement a year ago. Have written and called for that $100 credit since then, and been told "the check is in the mail" dozens of times. Have spoken to bookkeeper, etc. Good product, just don't expect that $100 shipping refund!

The fact that they may drop suddenly as others have experienced, at road speed does concern me. When I do have the chance I like to let my vehicles run at the speeds they can. In many places between California and Colorado (where I have family and have been known to drive) there are very open flat areas that allow a good pace. Also there is a regular run in Nevada that allows you to really put a vehicle through its paces. Blowing out a air bladder in one corner would not be fun then. Probably not at 75 mph either if you need to steer a bit since the body drops right down on the tire.
I did not pay $10,000 on my 04 but really do not want to drop almost 1/2 of the purchase price on suspension unless it is better, will not drop.and will last the time needed to repay the investment,
I must say it is difficult for me to tell if my vehicle drops at speed as it is supposed to since my Harbor Freight tape measure keeps bending in the wind..

Jag Suspension Axiom...
Why use 4 parts when 183 will do?
(X350 suspension problems make these wonderful cars basically worthless on the used market. They are rapidly becoming a staple at the local "buy here; pay here" low rent used car dealer. Beware that the "rebuilt" air shocks (and pumps) are directed at this market, where simply getting the damn thing up off the ground long enough to sell is the principal goal)
