Question Overhead console removal

The set of 3 garage door opener switches in the the Overhead Console have come loose. When I try to operate one of the switches the set of 3 slightly recedes into the console making actuation less than positive. I think, I need to remove the console to get at the problem.

It looks to me like you simply pull the console down straight down. Any comment from those who have removed the Overhead Console themselves?

I managed to lose a pair of sunglasses behind the console somehow so had to take it off. I found the instructions for adding the microphone (attached) and followed those.

I hate doing this sort of stuff in case plastic bits break but it wasn't too bad.

I have done it a few times like so:

open the eyeglass compartment and check for a screw, if it is there, remove it. You will need to pry the entire assembly starting with the end closest to the rearview mirror. You can use either a trim pry tool, or your fingers. It may take some force to pull down and toward you. The entire assembly should come down. Carefully disconnect the single wire harness.

The next steps involve disassembling the assembly. Some of it is plastic welded, just clip those off with some dykes and carefully pull it apart piece by piece. By the way, the posts you just clipped happen to be hollow and i was able to reassemble everything by using very small screws and washers.

Thanks boys. I pulled down the overhead console as advised. In the end, however, I decided not to break the plastic spot welds for access to the 3 ganged garage door switch. Call me chicken.

What I did do was replace the console and reprogram the garage door opener to the far right switch as this side appeared secure.

For those attempting this R&R do remember to install the rear of the console before latching the front (closest to windscreen).

So you bought a whole new assembly? What did you do with the old one? I put mine back together with screws which made it a lot more solid in my humble opinion, the existing holes and posts were a perfect match.

No, no. I reinstalled the old one. Have no clue where to source a replacement and wouldn't do a switch out for such a miner issue. If my fix turns out to be unsatisfactory will go ahead and cut the plastic welds.

Thanks for the follow up.

Default 2004 xj8 overhead console switches loose and not working

Some of buttons are loose. When I push they basically go into housing unit.
I am afraid I will have to buy a whole console.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Perhaps another example of this vehicle having been over engineered with little thought to the real world.

My overhead courtesy lights would not come on when doors were opened; only when little buttons were pushed. Center one did not light at all no matter what. So I pulled console to investigate; thinking maybe multi bulbs like the rear dome lights? Entire plastic frame completely disintegrated into a dozen shards of sharp plastic so I bought a used console on ebay. It arrived damaged due to poor packaging.
The buttons push tiny plastic plungers that engage the actual tiny microswitch. The plungers fail and the black button will either jam up or just flop loose. A new console is $95; I paid 65 for used one and am highly disappointed. BTW, new console does not light the lights either when door is opened so back to square one. There is only a single bulb at each position, not multi like rear. Very true that use of cheap materials and poor design detracts from the overall impression. Falling on deaf ears no doubt...
