Default Parkbrake fault (04 xj8 4.2l)

I finally got my inspection, so now I can focus on other issues. The newest one is the dashboard alert that my parkbrake has a fault. The yellow light is also on. The parkbrake is engaging and disengaging as it should, manually and automatically. I'm planning on replacing all brake pads soon, even though they are not excessively worn. I've read a few posts on the forum with related issues, including a couple with recalibration instructions, but they haven't provided any solution yet.
Are there any concerns I should be aware of while I get it sorted out, such as the brake not releasing and leaving me stuck? I suspect it may be a wiring or connection issue, and am trying to figure out which wires or connectors are the likely culprit.
* just wanted to mention I have not disconnected the battery Yet, and am concerned about what unwanted consequences that might have.

I am surprised the re-cal did not solve the issue. Get the codes read to point in the right direction. There should be codes with the yellow light on.

If the EPB MIL is ON, there are DTCs in the module.

when I disconnected the battery the first time I just had to reset the automatic. Window function, and the light was off for a short time. The second time I disconnected it, when it was hooked back up I had a message to "set parkbrake," which I did, but i didn't recalibrate it. The light has been off for a few days now.
