I just realised something, you want to put these wings/vents on your X358 XJR (the one in your garage)?

I'm told X358 wings are different to the X350 ones at the front where the transition to the bumper is. Basically if you put an X358 bumper on a car with X350 wings, it doesn't line up....

Also, I sent you a PM about taking some moulds of the vents, let's do this!

Oh really? Damn, so presume there'd be some kind of step?
No, sold the XJR.. they were going to go on this one:
XJ Conversion by Beavis1975 | Photobucket

So, are you saying that what I need is these with the Wald front bumper..which was presumably designed to transition to the correct wings? Anyone fitted a 358 bumper with 350 wings that can show me what it gives?

Took the vents to a top quality metal polisher yesterday, he took some time to talk to me, and start work on them so I could see what he does - a top bloke!

Also got another quote for 3d scanning, much more reasonable at around £600. Will keep looking....

LOL I just realised who you are Hercules.

I'm only repeating what I was told about the differences X350/X358.

Know anyone with an X350? it's not a big job to remove the bumper (not that I need to tell you that) swap them over & you will see the difference...

£600 for 3D scan is getting close, yeah keep looking or otherwise silicone moulding.

Yep thats me ;-)

No worries, it was a good shout. In all honesty in my excitement at finding the wings and vents I completely forgot about the wing differences.

Yeah, could find a bumper to check the differences - I wondered though if someone had already done the fitment, I know there was several people talking about part conversions (because of the cost of the wings) on the UK forum before I did my 358 conversion.

Anyhow, for now i'll make do with comparing the wings i've got - Will put some pics up when i've picked the vents up from the polishers.

Simplest way is to take some silicon molds.
You can do this yourself easily or jhave a model shop do it for you

See here for the stuff I use
Tin-Cure Silicone Rubber, Pour & Brush On Silicones from Smooth-On

Once a silicone mold is made copies can be cast in as little as 5 Mins
This can be done in Plastic and chromed or panted or cast from alloy and polished

Happy to help you though this process

The alternative is to 3D scan. I do this as well at home
All you need is a digital camera. Pics are taken around the object.
The object stays still and you rotate 360deg around it taking pics making sure the pics over lap getting the top and sides.
From here you load the pics into some software and presto a wire frame model

The next trick is to flip the object and repeat the pics. You then merge the 2 wire frames

Autocad had great free online software for this
See here Autodesk 123D - Free 3D Modeling Software, 3D Models, DIY Projects, Personal Fabrication Tools

I’ve used this but have dedicated software now and convert it to a solid model in solidworks after that

If you take the pics I'm happy to make the cad model but the question is then what to do next. I can CNC machine them but thats a lot of work and expense, casting will be a lot quicker, cheaper and easier. You can do it in the kitchen too!!!

Cheers

Thanks all, i'll have a think about this when I get them back next week from the metal finishers.

After an exhaustive search i've found this...
Facelift Bumper Conversion - Page 7
(see last car on the page) Here's the pic

350 wings with a 358 bumper... Looks good enough to me, especially as eyes will be drawn to my gleaming portfolio vents ;-) and my newly purchased Callisto alloys - purchased for..... £150!

Didn’t know you can modify the inner arches, great info.

PS we don’t need all the vent pieces to do a repo, just a mold of the outside face (assembled)

Cheers
